Karhoff Grabs Double-Double in 94-72 Loss to No. 7

OMAHA, Neb. – Redshirt freshman center John Karhoff achieved his first career double-double, but it was not enough to propel the UNO men's basketball team past No. 7 Fort Hays State in a 94-72 loss at Sapp Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. With the defeat, the Mavericks are now 10-7 (7-6 MIAA), while the nationally-ranked Tigers are 17-2 (11-2 MIAA).
Karhoff scored 10 points and pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards. The Creighton Prep graduate shot 4-for-8 from the field and also had an assist in 27 minutes of action.
Three Mavericks joined Karhoff in double-figure scoring -- senior guard Tyler Bullock (18), junior guard Mitch Albers (13) and senior guard Jeff Martin (11).
UNO scored its lowest point total in conference play this year with 72 points, which it also had in a 74-72 loss at Emporia State on Dec. 8.
Fort Hays had two 25-point scorers in Dominique Jones and Dijon Smith, who reached a career high. Moses Dayee and Corbin Kuntzsch also tallied 10 points apiece, while Kuntzsch grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double of his own.
UNO struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first half, shooting 30 percent (11-for-36) to FHSU's 61 percent (17-for-28). The Tigers were also 8-of-13 from long range, helped by two 3-pointers by Jones and three from Dayee. Smith, a native of Omaha, was a big presence in the middle, tallying 10 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. The Tigers took as large as a 25-point lead in the first stanza, helped by an 11-0 run to make it 37-13, finishing with a score of 49-26 by halftime.
Through UNO improved to 43 percent shooting from the field in the second half, the Tigers held their consistent double-figure lead. Down 22, Martin cut the margin to 89-70 on a 3-pointer with three minutes to go, but Chase Waldman hit a trey to seal the game at 94-72.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 29, traveling to Lincoln. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Jefferson City, Mo.
