JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The UNO men's basketball team used a solid all-around effort to jet past Lincoln, 99-75, at Jason Gym on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 11-7 (8-6 MIAA) on the year, while LU drops to 2-16 (0-14 MIAA).
Nebraska-Omaha shot 63 percent from the floor as a team, sparked by a season-high-tying 28 points from senior guard #Tyler Bullock#. The Lincoln, Neb., native shot 9-for-12 from the field and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line while also adding four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Senior guard #Torrian Harris# had his fourth double-double of the year, keyed by 14 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds, as well as three assists, two steals and a block. Sophomore forward #Alex Welhouse# joined the senior duo in double figures with 14 points of his own, and freshman guard #Caleb Steffensmeier# chipped in 10.
Lincoln was led by Pierre DeClue's 20 points, while Terrell Williams added 19, and Cedric Ridle Jr. had 18.
UNO held the Blue Tigers to a 39 percent team shooting performance and also outrebounded LU, 43-25. The Mavericks had an outstanding inside effort, scoring 50 points in the paint to Lincoln's 26.
Nebraska-Omaha took an immediate lead to open the game and never looked back, with Bullock, Welhouse and redshirt freshman center #John Karhoff# responsible for the first 12 points. Two baskets by Bullock and a pair of 3-pointers from Welhouse gave the Mavericks a 34-17 advantage, and a free throw from Karhoff later gave the Mavs' their largest lead of the night with a 24-point margin.
Steffensmeier hit a trey with two minutes to go to put UNO over the 50-point mark in the first half, after which Lincoln passed 30 points on a jumper by Eric Gentle. The first half saw the Mavericks surge to a 55-35 halftime score, shooting 65 percent from the field and outworking Lincoln on the boards, 25-11.
The two squads traded shots in the first part of the second half, with the Blue Tigers cutting the lead to 68-58 with a 21-10 run. DeClue totaled eight points in the six-minute span, while Ridle had seven. Derek Stokes then tossed in a jumper to bring it within eight, but the Mavericks responded with a 13-6 scoring run to make it 81-63.
Harris and Karhoff chipped in two shots apiece over two minutes, and senior guard #Jeff Martin# poured in a 3-pointer with 3:26 remaining, extending the lead to 92-70. He then hit another in the final minute, and a pair of Steffensmeier charity shots capped the win at 99-75.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 2, traveling to Northwest Missouri State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
