Mavericks Trap Bearcats in 64-56 Win

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The UNO men's basketball team won its fifth consecutive road game in league play, grabbing a 64-56 win at Northwest Missouri State at Bearcat Arena on Thursday night. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 12-7 (9-6), while NWMSU drops to 5-14 (3-12 MIAA) on the year.
Junior guard #Mitch Albers# led the way offensively, finishing with 19 points and a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line. Albers also pulled down seven rebounds – a career-high effort – and had two assists, a block and a steal.
Senior guard #Tyler Bullock joined Albers in double-figure scoring with 13 points and added three assists and four rebounds. Senior guard Torrian Harris# narrowly missed a double-double, recording nine points and 10 rebounds, in addition to a trio of assists and three blocks. As a team, UNO had just nine turnovers on the night.
Three Bearcats finished in double figures – Elijah Allen (17 points), Shaneel Narayan (12) and Arunas Simanavicius (11). Tyler Funk also dished out five assists off the bench, and Jake Reinders topped the effort on the glass with six boards.
UNO, which never trailed, kept the Bearcats off the board for nearly five minutes, as NWMSU missed its first seven shots. The Mavericks ran out to a 13-0 lead, then extended it to 20-4 before Northwest brought it back to a more controlled score of 25-21. Narayan poured in seven points off the bench, going 3-for-5 in the first half, while Allen added five points.
For Nebraska-Omaha, Albers was 3-for-6 from the field for nine points in the first stanza, and Harris had a well-rounded effort with seven points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Sophomore forward #Alex Welhouse# continued his steady shooting from long range, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, both of which highlighted the opening unanswered run. In addition, redshirt freshman #Matt Hagerbaumer# scored four points over three minutes off the bench.
Northwest Missouri State threatened early in the second half when Simanavicius popped in a 3-pointer to cut the game to 42-40 UNO. Eight straight points from Albers, however, put the Mavs up 50-43, and a free throw from Welhouse gave Nebraska-Omaha a double-digit lead again.
With UNO up by nine with under three minutes to go, NWMSU's Allen and DeShaun Cooper teamed up for six points to come within four points. The Mavs halted the rally and called a timeout with a minute left, and Bullock came out to immediately hit a jumper, followed by a pair of Albers free throws, capping the win at 64-56.
“I thought we held our composure, and we stayed together,” Head Coach #Derrin Hansen# said. “We banded together, and that's going to be a good thing in February because February basketball can be tough. I really thought we did a good job tonight.”
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 5, hosting Emporia State. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
