Mavs Race Past Bulldogs for 78-74 Win

OMAHA, Neb. -- #Heather Pohl# sparked UNO with 20 points, 16 in the first half, and #Jamie Nash# took over in the second half, as the Mavericks' women's basketball team upset Truman University, 78-74, Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The win marked the second conference win of the year for the Mavs, who improved to 5-6, 2-5 in the MIAA. Truman fell to 6-5, 4-3 in the MIAA, dropping its first road game in four MIAA road contests.
Pohl connected on 4-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half and helped UNO jump out to an 18-9 lead, with Pohl scoring eight of the Mavs' 18 points.The Mavs hit 7-of-8 shots for an 87.5-percent average to start the game, but then missed 7-of-9, as Truman crept back and tied the game at 21-21.
Pohl quickly responded with her third 3-pointer of the game to put the Mavs back in front 24-21. After a Jennifer Conway basket for Truman, Pohl sank two free throws on an intentional foul, and #Lauren Andrews# converted a layup in transition for a 28-23 lead with 5:28 left in the first half.
Andrews put in another short basket off of a nice pass from #Carly Cator#, then Cator hit a 15-foot jumper to put UNO up nine, 34-25, with 3:04 left in the half. After two Bulldog free throws, Pohl hit her fourth 3-pointer of the half on a cross-court pass from #Paige Frauendorfer# to give UNO its biggest first-half lead at 37-27. The Mavs went into the halftime break holding a 39-29 advantage.
The Mavs moved out to a 44-33 lead early in the second half on a long jumper by Pohl, but Truman answered with a 19-6 run over the next 5:58 to take its first lead when Becka McHenry hit a pull-up jumper in transition with 11:34 to play to make it 52-50.
The Mavs fell down 54-50, but #Jasamine Reeves#, who came back from an injury suffered earlier in the game, blocked two shots and made a layup, and Nash and Frauendorfer scored to tie the game at 56-56.
The Bulldogs' Nicole Gloor hit a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 59-56 Truman, but Nash made two more fastbreak layups to put UNO back in front 60-59 with 5:29 left.
After a Gloor basket helped Truman reclaim a 61-60 lead, UNO scored seven straight points, thanks to five points in one possession. After a missed shot by Truman, Nash pushed the ball up the floor past every Truman defender and converted the shot and drew the foul to give UNO a 64-61 lead with 4:34 remaining. Nash missed the free throw, but Pohl rebounded the ball and missed a shot long right into the arms of Jasamine Reeves, who put the ball in the hoop while being fouled. Reeves made her free throw, giving UNO the 67-61 lead.
Leading 69-68, Nash bombed away from the wing and drilled the 3-pointer to put UNO up 72-68 with 1:16 left in the game. The Mavs hit 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Nash finished with 16 points, 11 coming in the second half. Frauendorfer added 13 and Jasamine Reeves finished with a career-high nine points while adding three blocks. The Mavs shot a season-best 48.3 percent from the field.
Breanna Daniels led four Bulldogs in double-figures with 18 points.
UNO is back on the road this Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. contest against Central Missouri.
