Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The No. 9 UNO Maverick softball team adjusted well to its last-minute schedule change, sweeping a pair of games on Saturday at Colorado at Colorado Springs.
The Mavericks won the first game of the double-header, 6-2, then won the second game 6-4 to start the season 2-0. UNO was originally scheduled to play in Oklahoma this weekend, but snow canceled those games. Instead, the Mavericks decided on Thursday to head to Colorado Springs for a four-game weekend against the Mountain Lions.
In the first game, #Beth Haley# pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs, both unearned, while striking out seven in picking up her first win of the season.
At the plate, the Mavericks got to the Mountain Lions early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first. #Amber Lutmer#, #Alli Hukill and Emma Wright# each had two hits in the game. Wright had three RBI, while Lutmer had two.
In game two, the Mavs jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but UCCS responded with a four-run fourth inning to tie the game. In the top of the seventh with the score still tied 4-4, Lutmer reached second to lead off the inning on a single and an error. #Lindsay Redding# came in to pinch-run for Lutmer and advanced to third on a groundout by Hukill. Wright then singled home Redding for the go-ahead run.
After Wright reached second on a wild pitch, followed by a pop-up to the first baseman, Sara Elliott singled to score Wright for the final run of the game.
#Lindsey Slocum# picked up the win in game two, going the distance with five hits allowed, two earned runs and seven strikeouts.
Elliott went 3-for-3 with one RBI in game two, while Wright went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wright finished the day 5-for-8 with four RBIs and the game-winning hit in game two.
UNO and UCCS will play two more games on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. (Central).
