Bullock Joins 1,000 Point Club As Mavs Defeat Trum

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The UNO men's basketball team picked up its sixth straight road win, defeating Truman 89-79 at Pershing Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 15-7 (12-6 MIAA) on the year, while TSU drops to 6-15 (4-13 MIAA).
Senior guard #Tyler Bullock# hit the 1,000 career points milestone, as he now has 1,010 points in his second season as a Maverick. Bullock narrowly missed a double-double with 21 points and a career-best nine rebounds on the day, as well as four assists and a trio of steals. The Lincoln, Neb., native is the 33rd player in program history to join the 1,000 Point Club and the only one to do so in just two years.
Junior guard #Mitch Albers# led UNO's scoring effort with 25 points, shooting 8-for-16 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line. The game marked the third time this season that Albers and Bullock have both surpassed the 20-point mark in the same contest.
Three Mavericks joined Bullock and Albers in double-figure scoring -- senior guard #Jeff Martin# (12), sophomore forward #Alex Welhouse# (12) and senior guard #Torrian Harris# (11). Harris also pulled down 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year.
Truman was topped by Alex Henderson's 26 points, while Tom Norton hit five 3-pointers en route to 21 points. Ethan Freeman grabbed a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds -- along with eight assists -- and Vesko Filchev chipped in 12 points of his own.
As a team, UNO shot 47 percent for the game and improved from 42 percent in the first half to 53 percent in the second half. The Maverick defense limited Truman to just 31 percent shooting and nine field goals made in the second half. As a squad, UNO also outrebounded the Bulldogs, 44-32.
Down 43-35 at halftime, Nebraska-Omaha roared back in the second stanza, helped by 21 points from Albers. Filchev and Henderson opened second-half play for TSU with back-to-back baskets, but Welhouse hit a trey to get the Mavs rolling. Two shots from Harris brought UNO within one, and another 3-pointer by Welhouse later tied the game at 52-52. Both squads were held scoreless for a three-minute stretch before layups from Bullock and Martin put UNO, which never trailed again, up by six points.
With seven minutes to go, Albers banked in a pair of free throws to extend the Mavericks' lead to 68-58, their first double-digit advantage of the game. TSU's Pat Sodemann cut the margin to six with a charity shot, but Albers poured in a jumper and a free throw to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
In the final minutes, Bullock scored a quick bucket, and Albers hit another, putting the Mavs up by 12. Albers chipped in a layup and a free throw again, and Bullock put up UNO's final points with a shot inside, giving UNO its largest lead of the day at 89-73. Truman mustered two final shots from Freeman, but it was not enough to overcome Nebraska-Omaha, which took the 89-79 win for its third season sweep of a conference opponent this year.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 16, hosting Central Missouri. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
