Karhoff Propels Mavericks Past UCM, 79-67

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball team extended its win streak to six games, defeating Central Missouri 79-67 on Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Mavericks are now 16-7 (13-6 MIAA), while the Mules drop to 16-9 (11-8 MIAA). The streak ties UNO's span of six consecutive wins earlier this season, achieved from Dec. 11 to Jan. 12.
Redshirt freshman center #John Karhoff# grabbed his second career double-double with a career-best 17 points and 10 rebounds. Karhoff shot 6-for-10 from the field and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Four Mavs joined Karhoff in double-figure scoring: junior guard #Mitch Albers# (14), senior guard #Torrian Harris# (12), sophomore forward #Alex Welhouse# (11) and senior guard #Tyler Bullock# (11). Welhouse had a trio of 3-pointers, and senior guard #Jeff Martin# also hit a pair of treys. In addition, Bullock dished out a team-leading four assists.
UCM was led by Joel Barkers and Tyler Oakley, who each tallied 18 points for the night. Reggie Stallings added 12 points, and Tyrone Young chipped in 11. Oakley also led the way on the glass with eight boards.
As a team, UNO outshot the Mules 49 percent to 42 percent and outrebounded UCM 35-34. Both teams turned the ball over just nine times for the evening.
The Mavericks led 47-41 at the half, improving to a perfect 11-0 on the year when taking an advantage into halftime. Karhoff had already hit double figures in scoring by that time with 11 points, while Welhouse and Albers each had nine. UNO shot 62 percent from the field in the first half, in addition to 57 percent from behind the arc.
Nebraska-Omaha took its largest lead of the game 13:05 into the second half, going up 65-47 on a there by Martin. A 14-6 run by UCM cut the lead to 10 points, but it was the closest the Mules ever came, as Bullock chipped in a layup and UNO hit three pairs of free throws in the final minutes. The Mavericks also held Central Missouri to just six points over the last seven minutes of the game, closing off the win at 79-67.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 19, traveling to Southwest Baptist. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at John Q. Hammons Court in Bolivar, Mo., and the game will be televised through MIAA TV.
