Griffons Fight Past Mavericks, 67-54

OMAHA, Neb. -- The UNO women's basketball team was unable to recover from a cold shooting performance to start the game, as the Missouri Western Griffons defeated the Mavericks 67-54 on Wednesday at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO's fifth straight loss dropped them to 6-15 overall and 3-14 in the MIAA. The Griffons improved to 11-9 overall and 8-8 in the MIAA while sweeping the season series.
After falling behind by as many as 22 in the first half, the Mavericks rallied to get within 10 points at 53-43 with 7:54 remaining. However, the Griffons put together an 11-3 run over the next 3:53 to claim a 64-46 advantage. UNO battled back to within 11 at 65-54 on a #Katie Kane# basket with 1:32 to play, but was unable to pose a threat to the Griffons down the stretch.
#Heather Pohl# led the Mavericks with her second straight double-double, notching 16 points and 11 rebounds. #Paige Frauendorfer# added 14 points.
The Griffons sprinted to a 34-17 lead by halftime, as the Mavericks started the game 4-of-26 (15.4 percent) from the field, including 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range. The Mavericks went on a 7-2 run to close the half after falling behind 32-10.
On the other end of the court, the Griffons hit 8-of-20 (40 percent) from long range in the first half. Lauren Nolke, who came into the game as the MIAA's second-leading 3-point shooter at 42.4 percent, hit four in the first half, and Jessica Koch added three of her own to spark Missouri Western. The Griffons reeled off a 9-0 run to start the game and a 10-0 run later in the half to take control of the game.
Koch finished with a game-high 31 points, while Nolke finished with 14. The Griffons went 0-for-3 from behind the arc in the second half, but scored 23 of their 33 points in the paint and at the free throw line.
Next, the Mavericks travel to Kirksville, Mo., for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday at Truman.
