Mavericks Split Doubleheader Against Gorillas

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The UNO baseball team split the opening doubleheader of its four-game series at Pittsburg State, earning a 14-6 win before dropping a 5-3 loss on Friday evening. The Mavericks are now 6-3 (4-2 MIAA) on the year, while PSU is 4-5 (1-5 MIAA).
Junior Brady Hohl had a solid night at the plate, going a combined 4-for-8 on two doubles and a home run. Hohl finished with a team-leading three runs scored and three runs batted in. Senior Tyler Davies and junior Mark Waldron also had three RBI each.
GAME 1 – UNO 14, PITTSBURG STATE 6
Three Mavericks recorded a trio of hits apiece in the first game – junior Martin Sartin (3-for-4), junior Trevor Gappa (3-for-5) and sophomore Connor McCrite (3-for-4). Gappa and McCrite each scored two runs, while all three players had one RBI apiece. Hohl and Davies each homered as well.
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (1-1) captured his first win of the season with a five-inning effort, giving up six runs while striking out three batters. Ryan Sorell (0-2) took the loss, throwing four innings and giving up 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Down 2-1, UNO exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning, when the Mavs batted around. Hohl led off with a homer to left field to tie the game at 2-2. Sartin drew a walk, followed by back-to-back singles from Gappa and McCrite, which scored Sartin. Davies then singled through the left side to plate Gappa, and McCrite came in on a single to left by Colby McCord. Mark Waldron came through with a two-RBI triple to center that scored McCord and Davies, later adding a run himself on a Hohl single to left that made it 8-2.
Pittsburg State cut the lead to 8-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Nebraska-Omaha came right back in the fifth with four more runs. With McCrite singling up the middle to put one on for Davies, the senior smashed one over the center field wall to go up 10-4 and force a PSU pitching change. Hohl walked and advanced to second on sophomore Tyler Splichal's single up the middle. Senior Jed Hanson dropped a single into center field that scored Hohl from second, and a Sartin single to right brought in Splichal to put the Mavs' advantage at 12-4.
The Gorillas added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough, as the Mavericks added an insurance run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Junior Brandon Winkelmann scored in the sixth, while redshirt freshman Patrick Campbell tallied his first run of the year, putting the final score at 14-6.
GAME 2 – PITTSBURG STATE 5, UNO 3
Despite a complete game pitching effort from senior Ben Brown (1-1), Pittsburg State rebounded in the nightcap for a 5-3 win. Brown tossed a career-long eight innings, giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking one. Brad Phillips (1-0) was credited with the win, going two-thirds of an inning in relief. Jake Kraft earned his first save of the year, closing the game with a strikeout in the ninth inning.
Freshman Caleb Palensky had a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Hohl also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and one score, and Splichal registered the Mavericks' only other RBI of the contest.
Hohl led off the game with a double to right center, followed by a double down the left field line from Splichal that put UNO up 1-0 in the first. PSU was quiet until the bottom of the third, when Brad Foss had a leadoff double and came in on Colton Leet's RBI single through the right side to knot the score at 1-1.
The Gorillas tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth, but Nebraska-Omaha rallied immediately with Palensky's leadoff homer to right that made it 2-2. The home run was the first of Palensky's career.
In the eighth inning, Pittsburg State swiftly went up 5-2 on Chase Barnes' three-run homer to center. The Mavericks registered another run in the ninth, with Hohl doubling to center and scoring Campbell, the pinch runner. With one on and the tying run at the plate, however, PSU pressed the final UNO batter to fly out and ended the game at 5-3 to even the series at one game apiece.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, March 12, facing Pittsburg State in another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kan.
