UNO Splits Series Finale at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The UNO baseball team split its second doubleheader of the series at Pittsburg State, winning 3-1 before dropping a 6-4 loss at Al Ortolani Field on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks are now 7-4 (5-3 MIAA) on the year, while PSU is 5-6 (2-6 MIAA), as each squad took two games this weekend.
GAME 1 – UNO 3, PITTSBURG STATE 1
Junior Brady Hohl and sophomore Tyler Splichal each finished 3-for-4 with a run scored in the first game, leading the Mavs to a 3-1 victory. Senior Jed Hanson, junior Martin Sartin and junior Colby McCord also tallied an RBI apiece. Sophomore Zach Croonquist (2-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out a pair of batters and allowing no PSU hits. Alex Schell (0-1) took the loss, giving up nine hits and three runs over 7.2 innings of work while fanning two and walking one.
UNO got on the board immediately in the top of the first, as Hohl led off with a bunt single, then advanced to third on Splichal's single to right. Hanson drew a base with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, and PSU walked in a run when Sartin drew the base on balls to put UNO up 1-0.
The Gorillas were quiet until the bottom of the fifth, when Chase Barnes reached by way of a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a Maverick error. With the game tied at 1-1, Nebraska-Omaha scored the two runs it needed in the eighth on three hits. Splichal doubled down the right field line and came in on a Hanson single to center. Hanson was then plated on McCord's single down the left field line, making it 3-1 to seal the UNO win.
GAME 2 – PITTSBURG STATE 6, UNO 4
In the second game, despite UNO holding the Gorillas to no extra-base hits, Pittsburg State capitalized on four Maverick errors to capture the 6-4 victory in the series finale. Ryan Hintze (1-1) earned the win with a complete game effort, throwing seven innings and allowing five hits with four strikeouts. Andrew Reck (0-1), relieving starter Cory Buckley, was credited with the loss after 2.1 innings of work.
Tyler Splichal had another multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, while Hohl was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Sartin also had two RBI, and junior Mark Waldron went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Pittsburg State was led by Buster Reddick's 2-for-4 effort, while Taylor Sibala had two RBI, and Colton Leet scored twice and notched an RBI.
UNO took a 1-0 lead in the first, starting strong with Splichal's double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Sartin's double to left to put the Mavericks out front.
PSU responded with two runs in the second, as Reddick and Ian Robinson had back-to-back singles and advanced with a groundout. Leet singled through the left side to score Reddick, and Robinson later came across when UNO walked in a run to make it 2-1.
Nebraska-Omaha recorded two more runs in the third, as Waldron led off with a single o third, moved around with a Splichal single and knotted the score on Hanson's sacrifice fly to right. Hohl scored later in the inning on a groundout, putting the Mavericks back up 3-2.
The Gorillas went back up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead at 4-3. UNO tied it up again at 4-4 in the fifth, as Hohl scored again on Sartin's sacrifice fly to right.
Pittsburg State took control in the bottom of the frame, plating two runs to take their final winning lead at 6-4. Leet and Jason Graves and both scored on Sibala's two-RBI single through the left side, and it was all the Gorillas needed to take the win.
UNO returns to action March 19-20, hosting Washburn for the Mavericks' first home action of the year. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m., while Sunday's games are slated for Noon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
