The UNO baseball team returns home for a four-game conference series with its third MIAA opponent of the year on Friday, March 18. Friday's doubleheader is set for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town. It marks the Mavericks' first home contests of the year.
Nebraska-Omaha is 7-4 on the year, having split the series at Pittsburg State 2-2 last weekend. The Mavs are now fourth in the league with a 5-3 conference record.
Junior Brady Hohl led the way at the plate against the Gorillas, going a combined 8-for-15 (.533) over the four games. Hohl had two doubles and a home run, three RBI and a team-leading six runs scored. Sophomore Tyler Splichal added a trio of doubles, while freshman Caleb Palensky tallied the first homer of his career. Junior Joe Holtmeyer (1-1) also captured his first win of the year on the mound, tossing five innings with three strikeouts in the first game.

Setting a Date
UNO's weekend series with Washburn was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20. With rainy weather conditions forecasted for Omaha on Sunday, both doubleheaders were moved up one day and changed to different start times.
Last Time Out
UNO looks to gain an advantage in the all-time series with Washburn, which is tied at 36-36. The two teams last met on April 18, 2010 in Topeka, Kan., where the squads split the doubleheader with the Mavericks winning 11-6 before WU took the finale, 6-4.
In the finale game, Nebraska-Omaha totaled 12 hits, including five extra base hits. Tyler Splichal went 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and a three-run home run, while Travis Jacobi added a two-run shot. Ryan Tomlinson picked up his first career win with five innings of work on the mound.
Swiping Bags
Senior Jed Hanson has been the Mavericks' leading base-stealer in UNO's first three weeks of action, stealing six bags on seven tries. This year's total marks a vast jump in his performance from 2010, when he finished the year 7-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
Sartin's On a Streak
Through Saturday of last weekend's series at Pittsburg State, junior outfielder Martin Sartin had a team-best eight game hitting streak, in place since the beginning of the year.
Sartin, a transfer from Garden City Community College, has had a stellar Maverick debut in batting .433 with four doubles, two home runs and a team-leading 16 runs batted in. He has also scored 11 runs, tying with Jed Hanson to rank third on the squad.
In the Mavs' opening weekend against Augustana, Sartin homered in back-to-back games on Opening Day, finishing with eight RBI and five runs scored.
Mavs Welcome 20 Fresh Faces to Roster
UNO's 2011 roster features 20 newcomers, made up of nine true freshmen and 11 transfers. Fifteen are Nebraska natives, while 13 hail from the Omaha metropolitan area.
The list also includes multiple former teammates who have been reunited, as Derek Landis, Brandon Winkelmann, Scotty Donner and Ben Brown played together at Iowa Western to begin their collegiate careers. Brown, Kyle Kruger, Anthony Falcone and Zach Williamsen are all products of Millard West High School, while Caleb Palensky and Beau Suponchick played together at Papillion-LaVista South.

Newcomer Ben Brown (1-1), a senior right-handed pitcher, is slated to start on the mound for the Mavericks again this weekend. He earned his first win as a Maverick on March 3 at Southwest Baptist, surrendering seven hits over five innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
Brown, a product of Millard West and a transfer from Campbell University, went 4-3 for the Camels in 2010. He struck out 25 batters and had a 6.88 earned-run average, starting five of his 17 appearances on the mound.
Derek Landis is also set to join the starting pitching rotation, as he is projected to start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Landis is 1-0 on the year with a 0.00 ERA, 4.1 hitless innings and five strikeouts to his credit.
Holtmeyer Named to Tino Martinez Award Watch List
Junior right-handed pitcher Joe Holtmeyer was named to the Tino Martinez Award's initial 2011 watch list, the award committee announced in mid-February. The returning All-American is among 91 student-athletes nominated for the honor, which is given annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division II baseball.
The award is named for former University of Tampa Spartan, Olympian, first-round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez. Nominations are made by baseball sports information contacts and members of the media. Omission from the initial list does not exclude additional players from future consideration.
The list will be updated with a mid-season release in mid-April, and semi-finalists are scheduled to be announced on May 7. Finalists will be named on May 19, after which fans will be invited to vote online at TinoAward.com to help determine the winner. The award will be announced after the conclusion of the Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C., May 28 to June 4.

Junior right-handed pitcher Joe Holtmeyer had a stellar sophomore season in 2010, fanning 152 batters, the most of any pitcher in NCAA Division II. The Creighton Prep product was honored as a first-team All-American and was the Rawlings/ABCA South Central Regional Pitcher of the Year. He also earned MIAA Pitcher of the Year plaudits and was a first-team all-conference selection after going 9-2 with a 2.89 ERA over 87.1 innings of work.
This season, despite a record of 0-1, Holtmeyer has stayed true to his dominant ways, striking out 13 batters over two appearances to begin the season.

UNO returns a trio of all-conference performers from 2010 on this year's squad in junior right-handed pitcher Joe Holtmeyer, sophomore infielder Tyler Splichal and junior infielder Brady Hohl. Holtmeyer, the MIAA Pitcher of the Year, was a first-team honoree, while Splichal and Hohl garnered second-team honors.
Holtmeyer led the conference in nearly every major pitching category, compiling a 9-2 record, a nation-leading 152 strikeouts and a 2.89 ERA over 87.1 innings on the mound.
Splichal batted .410 in his inaugural campaign with 22 doubles, five home runs and 42 RBI. En route to MIAA Freshman of the Year plaudits, he started all 51 games he played in and had a team-leading 200 at-bats, scoring 35 runs with 82 hits.
Hohl also started all 51 of his appearances, hitting .354 with 10 doubles, two triples and a home run as a sophomore. He led the Mavericks with 45 runs scored and had 42 RBI while drawing 16 walks. and stealing six bases Hohl was also second on the team in hit-by-pitches, as he was plunked 15 times over the year.
UNO Chosen Third in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2011 preseason poll, the league office announced Feb. 7. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches.
The Mavericks earned 100 points in the poll. The 12 conference coaches selected Central Missouri as their preseason favorite and voted Emporia State at No. 2.
