UNO Takes Two Wins Over Washburn

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team captured two wins in its home opener on Friday, defeating Washburn 5-2 and 5-3 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the victories, the Mavericks improve to 9-4 (7-4 MIAA), while WU drops to 6-7 (6-4 MIAA) on the year.
GAME 1 – UNO 5, WASHBURN 3
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (2-1) tossed a complete-game two-hitter to open the day, striking out 11 batters over seven innings. Washburn's Brett Ash (1-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs – four earned – on 10 hits over six innings of work.
Junior Colby McCord and freshman Caleb Palensky each finished 2-for-3 at the plate, with McCord registering one run batted in and Palensky scoring once. Sophomore Tyler Splichal also tabbed a pair of RBI.
Nebraska-Omaha took its first lead in the first inning, as junior Brady Hohl started off with a leadoff single, then stole second. Junior Martin Sartin's RBI single to center scored Hohl from second, putting UNO up 1-0.
Washburn countered with a three-run second inning, as Andy Petz led off with a walk and scored on Dane Simoneau's RBI double to left center. Matt Raabe walked and advanced to second on a groundout, putting both runners in scoring position for Blake Hageman, who singled through the right side to plate two runs and gave WU a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the third, when senior Jed Hanson doubled and later scored on McCord's RBI single up the middle. UNO tacked on three more runs to take the lead in the fourth, starting with consecutive singles by Palensky, senior Tyler Davies and junior Trevor Gappa. With the bases loaded, Splichal doubled down the right field line to score Palensky and Gappa and put the Mavs ahead at 4-3. Gappa then came in on a WU error, giving UNO its final score of 5-3. Holtmeyer did his part, holding Washburn hitless over the last three innings and fanning five of the last nine batters.
GAME 2 – UNO 5, WASHBURN 2
Senior Ben Brown (2-1) grabbed the win in game two, giving up one run and six hits over seven innings and striking out three. Derek Fogel (0-2) was credited with the loss after six innings of work, during which he surrendered five runs – three earned – on six hits with five strikeouts. UNO's Zach Croonquist earned his first save of the year with an inning of hitless ball, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Splichal went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Hanson, McCord and Palensky each registered an RBI. Hanson, Gappa and junior Brandon Winkelmann each tallied a run for the Mavs, who totaled nine hits as a team to Washburn's six.
Nebraska-Omaha jumped on the board right away, with Splichal plating the first run to go up 1-0. In the third frame, Splichal bunted and reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced to second on an error. He moved to third on a wild pitch that also allowed Hanson to get on first, and Splichal scored on McCord's RBI single to right. Hanson added another run on a fielder's choice – giving Palensky the RBI – and helped the Mavs take a 3-0 advantage.
UNO chipped in two more runs in the fourth, when Winkelmann was hit by a pitch to earn his way on base. Gappa then had an inside-the-park home run, putting Nebraska-Omaha ahead at 5-0. Washburn mustered a run in the fifth and one more in the eighth, but it was not enough to overcome UNO, with a final score of 5-2.
UNO and Washburn return to action on Saturday, March 19. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
