Mavericks Surge to Sweep of Washburn

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team took two wins over Washburn on Saturday, 6-1 and 14-4, to complete its four-game weekend sweep of the Ichabods at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the victories, UNO is now 11-4 (9-3 MIAA), while WU drops to 6-8 (6-6 MIAA) on the season.
GAME 1 – UNO 6, WASHBURN 1
Nebraska-Omaha took control early in the first game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead with five hits in the first inning. Junior Brady Hohl led off with a single to left and later scored on senior Jed Hanson's RBI base knock to right. Hanson then came in when junior Martin Sartin singled to right center, and Sartin came around on sophomore Connor McCrite's single to left to finish the scoring run.
The Mavericks plated one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the third, McCrite singled to left, then scored on freshman Caleb Palensky's RBI double down the left field line. Sophomore Tyler Splichal highlighted the fourth inning, homering to with a solo shot to left to put the Mavs up 5-0. Junior Colby McCord was responsible for the Mavs' run in the fifth, drawing a leadoff walk before scoring on McCrite's RBI single up the middle to push it to 6-0.
Washburn was held scoreless until the top of the seventh, when Cameron Kasel singled through the left side and was plated on David Wade's double to right center. It was the Ichabods' only run of the contest, finishing the score off at 6-1.
Sophomore Derek Landis (2-0) earned the win in his first career start for the Mavs, surrendering just two hits over five scoreless innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. WU's Raul Guevara (1-2) took the loss, throwing 12 hits and six runs over four innings.
McCrite finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Hanson, McCord and Palensky each tallied a pair of hits.
GAME 2 – UNO 14, WASHBURN 4
Washburn took an immediate lead in the series finale, going up 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Tyler Bean smashed a two-run roundtripper to left, and Marcus Peavler reached on a walk and later scored on a Blake Hageman single to right, making it 3-0.
Washburn managed just one more run in the sixth with a homer to left center by Wade. The Mavericks, meanwhile, got on the board in the third, as junior Trevor Gappa singled through the left side and scored on a bases-loaded walk.
In the fifth, UNO went on a scoring tear, plating five runs on four hits and taking advantage of two WU errors. Hohl, who reached on a walk, scored when Hanson got on base by way of an error. Hanson was the next to come in – on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Mark Waldron – that knotted the game at 3-3. A McCord single plated Splichal, putting UNO up 4-3. McCord then rounded the basepaths on junior Brandon Winkelmann's single to left, and a single to center by Gappa scored Palensky for the final run of the inning at 6-3.
Nebraska-Omaha recorded another big inning in the bottom of the sixth frame, as Splichal started the scoring when he walked and came in on McCord's double down the left field line. McCord registered a run of his own when Davies drew a bases-loaded walk, and Waldron and Palensky both came across when Gappa reached base on a fielding error to make it 10-4.
The seventh inning saw Splichal send a swift shot out of left center for his second homer of the day. In the eighth, UNO put it away with a trio of runs on four hits, finishing the game on the 10-run rule at 14-4 and capturing the series sweep over Washburn.
Andrew Reck (1-1) grabbed the victory, throwing five innings and giving up three runs and four hits with six strikeouts. Washburn starter Daren Parker, who had six strikeouts of his own, took the loss. Parker went five innings and surrendered seven hits, six runs – one earned – with two walks. UNO's Cory Buckley also earned his second save of the year with three innings of work, giving up two hits and a run to keep Washburn at bay.
Palensky went 3-for-5 at the plate in game two, scoring two runs and notching two RBI. Hanson and McCord both chipped in two hits and two RBI apiece, while Gappa contributed a pair of hits of his own.
UNO returns to action March 26-27, hosting Lincoln for a pair of conference doubleheaders. Saturday's action is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch, while Sunday's games begin at Noon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
