Mavs Battle to 6-5 Comeback Win Over Minnesota Sta

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team captured a comeback win over Minnesota State on Tuesday afternoon, rallying for a 6-5 victory in 10 innings at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the win, Nebraska-Omaha improves to 12-4 (9-3 MIAA) on the season, while MSU drops to 7-5.
Cody Brown (1-0) earned his first career win with two innings of shutout relief, surrendering three hits and no walks with a strikeout. Mahlon Zimmerman (0-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits and three walks over one inning of work.
Junior Colby McCord finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Connor McCrite and freshman Beau Suponchick tallied two hits apiece, and junior Brady Hohl had a pair of doubles. Senior Jed Hanson also hit his team-leading fourth home run of the year in the ninth inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Minnesota State went out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Danny Miller tripled to right center, then scored on an RBI groundout by Ben Kincaid. UNO tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame, when junior Brady Hohl led off with a double down the left field line and came in on a fielder's choice.
MSU sounded an answer in the second inning, Matt Kuchenbecker singled to right and Aaron Berner walked to put two on for Jeremy Sudbeck. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and Kuchenbecker scored on Scott Lindner's groundout. Zach Rowles then had an infield single, plating Berner to make it 3-1.
Minnesota State added another pair of runs in the fourth, started by Berner's leadoff bunt single. Sudbeck was then hit by a pitch, and Lindner chipped in a bunt single of his own to load the bases. Miller later sent a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Lindner and Sudbeck and extending MSU's advantage to 5-1.
Nebraska-Omaha struck back in the bottom of the eighth, as junior Martin Sartin led off with a double down the right field line and was plated on McCord's RBI single to make it 5-2. McCrite's bunt single moved McCord to third, and McCord then came in on sacrifice fly to center, bringing the Mavs within two of MSU.
UNO knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, as Hanson sent a two-run shot out of right field, also plating Suponchick and forcing the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, MSU threatened with two runners on but were unable to score. In the bottom of the frame, Nebraska-Omaha had back-to-back singles by McCord and McCrite, and both advanced on an errant throw in a pickoff attempt. Junior Mark Waldron drew a walk to load the bases, and senior Tyler Davies drew another base on balls to walk in McCord, who served as the winning run at 6-5.
UNO returns to action March 26-27, hosting Lincoln for a four-game conference series. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., while Sunday's games are set to begin at Noon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
