Mavericks Take Pair of Wins at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The UNO baseball team took two road wins at Southwest Baptist on Friday, defeating the Bearcats 8-2 in game one and 8-3 in game two. With the victories, the Mavericks improve to 5-2 (3-1 MIAA) on the season, while SBU drops to 2-3 (1-2 MIAA). UNO captured the series over Southwest, as it previously earned a 19-8 win after falling 11-8 in the opening game on Thursday.
Junior Martin Sartin combined for a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a pair of runs batted in, three runs scored and three walks drawn. Junior Trevor Gappa was 4-for-8 for the afternoon with two RBI and a run scored, while junior Mark Waldron finished 3-for-6 with two runs.
GAME 1 – UNO 8, SOUTHWEST BAPTIST 2
Senior Jed Hanson had an outstanding start at the plate in the first game, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and three runs scored.
Sophomore Derek Landis (1-0) earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief work, striking out five while giving up no hits or walks. SBU's Jared Berman (0-2) took the loss after throwing 4.1 innings and surrendering seven hits, three runs and three walks.
Southwest Baptist had three players with a multi-hit performance, as Tyler Christophel, Niko Saladis and Jeremiah Bryan each had a pair of hits.
Nebraska-Omaha plated two runs to open the game, as junior Brady Hohl had a leadoff single to first, stole second and came in on Hanson's infield single. Hanson then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, after which Gappa reached on a fielder's choice to score Hanson, making it 2-0.
Southwest Baptist got on the board in the bottom of the second, as Bryan put up one run on Christophel's RBI single to center. Leading 2-1, the Mavericks were quiet until the fifth, when Hanson opened the inning with a home run that made it 3-1.
In the sixth inning, UNO capitalized on three Bearcat errors and erupted for five runs on three hits. With two runners on, sophomore Tyler Splichal reached on an error, which allowed Waldron to score. Hanson then singled down the right field line, plating Hohl and Splichal to go up 6-1. Hanson swiped a bag and scored from second on Sartin's single through the right side, and Sartin came in when sophomore Connor McCrite reached base on a fielder's choice, putting the Mavs in control at 8-1.
Southwest managed one final run in the bottom of the seventh, with Bryan's RBI single to third that scored Taylor Trotter. It was not enough, however, as the Mavericks took the 8-2 win and the momentum heading into the final game of the series.
GAME 2 – UNO 8, SOUTHWEST BAPTIST 3
UNO kept swinging in the second game, totaling eight runs on 11 hits. Sophomore Tyler Splichal sent out his first home run of the year and finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sartin was also 2-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI and two walks, while Gappa went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Waldron also had two hits and scored a run, and senior Tyler Davies scored once and had three RBI.
Junior Cory Buckley (1-0) was credited with the win, throwing three innings in relief. Starter Andrew Reck went four innings and gave up three hits while striking out six with no walks. Mike Nicks (0-1) took the loss for SBU after six innings of work, giving up six runs on seven hits.
UNO jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Sartin scored on Davies' sacrifice fly to left. Southwest Baptist answered with one run in the fifth to knot the game, as Brendon Cox came in on Landon Young's single to right.
The Mavericks rallied immediately in the sixth, with Splichal smashing a leadoff homer to make it 2-1. Hanson then walked and stole second, and Sartin sent a double down the right field line to bring in Hanson. Gappa notched a double to left center to plate Martin, then later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Davies, putting UNO up 5-1.
In the seventh, Waldron scored on an RBI single to center by Splichal. UNO chipped in a pair of runs in the eighth, when Sartin started off with a single through the right side. He then stole second and advanced to third, scoring on a Davies single. Davies came in on junior Colby McCord's double to right center, extending the Mavericks' advantage to 8-1. SBU added two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but UNO earned the win, 8-3.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, March 12, traveling to Pittsburg State. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., while Sunday's contests will begin at Noon in Pittsburg, Kan.
