Bearcats Take Two Wins Against Mavericks

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The UNO baseball team dropped a pair of conference games Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-3 and 9-1 to Northwest Missouri State at Bearcat Field. The Mavericks are now 20-11 (16-10 MIAA), while NWMSU improves to 12-20 (11-15 MIAA) on the year.

Junior Brady Hohl led the way at the plate, finishing 4-for-7 on the day with a double and an RBI. Junior Trevor Gappa also belted his third home run of the year in the first contest.

GAME 1 – NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 6, UNO 3
NWMSU took the first game with a score of 6-3, and Huett (3-6) earned the victory with 2.1 innings of relief work. He surrendered just two hits, holding the Mavs scoreless while striking out two. UNO reliever Cody Brown took the loss, giving up three runs – two earned – on three hits over 1.1 innings.

Hohl led Nebraska Omaha at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. Northwest Missouri State's Alec Rosales went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Jake Kretzer was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI of his own.

Both teams were quiet until the bottom of the third, when the Bearcats put up three runs to take the lead. Rosales sent a home run over the wall in right center for the first run, and NWMSU then put two runners on. Geno DeAngeles singled to center to score Kretzer and later tacked on his own run when Eric McGlauflin reached on a fielding error to go up 3-0.

UNO tied it up in the fifth inning, starting the offensive rally with Gappa's homer to left center. Junior Colby McCord added a single through the right side, and sophomore Connor McCrite chipped in a double down the right field line to put two on for senior Tyler Davies. He then sacrificed in McCord, and Hohl singled to left to plate McCrite, knotting the game at 3-3.

Trios of runs were the name of the game, as Northwest Missouri State tacked on three more in the sixth to take its final lead. With two outs, Eckhardt singled to right center, and Kruger drew a walk. Rosales chipped in a single, and a fielding error allowed a pinch-running Alex Singleton and Eckhardt to score. NWMSU garnered one more run when Rosales stole third and came in on Kretzer's single through the right side, finishing the game at 6-3.

GAME 2 – NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 9, UNO 1
Northwest took a one-run lead in the second inning of the second game, then broke it wide open in the fourth with a seven-run push. They added one more run in the seventh and entered the final inning of play with a 9-0 lead.

UNO mustered a run in the top of the ninth to help the Mavs avoid their first shutout since 2009. Freshman Caleb Palensky walked and later advanced to third on a fielding error, then scored on McCord's RBI groundout to complete the game with a 9-1 score.

Chase Anderson (2-3) earned the win over 7.1 innings of work, allowing no runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Junior Andrew Reck (1-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings, while striking out two batters.

UNO returns to action on Saturday, April 16, hosting Missouri Southern. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
