OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's tennis team knocked off Emporia State on Thursday at Hanscom Park Tennis Center in a 5-4 tightly contested dual that came down to the final singles match.
The Mavs improved to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in MIAA action this year. The Hornets fell to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Drew Mercier and Matt Frost picked up a doubles point for UNO with an 8-3 win over Nick Steifer and Andrew Konetzni. But the Hornets took the other two doubles matches, as Andrew Shipp and Nathan Wehrman won 8-6 over Eric McKnight and Anthony Forcucci, and Mitchell Kibbe and Matt Van Horn defeated Ben Williams and Brandon Otoski, 8-0.
In singles play, Mercier, Frost and McKnight won in straight sets to give UNO a 4-2 lead in the team score. Mercier was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Steifer; Frost won 7-5, 6-1 over Kibbe, while McKnight swept Konetzni, 6-4, 6-0.
However, at No. 4 singles, Wehrman beat Forcucci, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, and Van Horn defeated Otoski, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, to even up the score at 4-4.
At No. 6 singles, Andrew Lescelius lost the first set to Ethan Deckert, 4-6, but came back to win the second set, 7-6, and the final set, 6-1, to pick up the victory and lift UNO to the 5-4 win.
UNO plays its final regular-season match next Tuesday at Northwest Missouri State at 4 p.m.
