OMAHA, Neb. -- The UNO women's tennis team sneaked past Emporia State Thursday afternoon, defeating the Hornets 5-4 at Hanscom Park Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 8-7 on the year.
In doubles action, juniors Traci Moklestad and Kelsie Olson fell short in an 8-2 loss to Emporia's Nicole Jara and Amanda Morris. At the No. 2 line, juniors Heather Hottman and Samantha Thomas defeated Talena Lorren and Alex Crowe in an impressive 8-0 win. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Jessica Hottman and junior Caitlin Christy won their match, 8-6, over Kristen Ford and Abby Morris.
On the singles side, the dual came down to the final match at No. 6 singles, where Christy sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ford. Moklestad lost at No. 1 singes to Jara (6-3, 6-1), while Olson was bested by Morris, 7-5, 7-5. At the No. 3 spot, Thomas defeated Lorren, 6-3, 4-6 (6-0). Heather Hottman won her match in a tiebreaker at No. 4 singles against Shea Schmidt, 6-2, 2-6 (6-1), and Jessica Hottman fell short to Crowe, 6-4, 6-0.
UNO finishes regular-season MIAA play on Monday, April 18, traveling to Northwest Missouri State. The match is slated for 4 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
