KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UNO golf team had five of the top six finishers to earn their third straight Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship on Tuesday. Dani Suponchick was the individual medalist for the second straight year as she and the Mavericks overcame cold and blustery conditions to post a resounding win over the league's five other teams.
The Mavs finished with a two-day score of 652, 54 strokes ahead of runner up Truman State which finished at 706. Missouri Western, which was second after day one, finished in third at 707. Fort Hays State took fourth at 711 followed by Northwest Missouri State (728) and Lincoln (768).
Suponchick, who had the first round lead with teammate Amy Powell after shooting 76 on Monday, closed with an 81 for a two-day total of 157. Armana Christianson was third overall and second for the Mavs with a score of 165. She shot 85 in the second round.
Powell finished third for UNO and fourth overall at 166 while Ricca Soper had an 84 on Tuesday for a 36-hole score of 167 to finish fifth overall. Rebecca Pollock was sixth overall with a two-day score of 170.
Truman State's Jennifer Lawson was the only golfer to break up UNO's pack. She finished second overall with a two-day score of 161.
Following the tournament, the MIAA announced that Suponchick had been named the Player of the Year. She and Christianson, Powell and Soper were named to the All-Tournament team, and Suponchick and Soper also were named to the 2011 All-MIAA Women's Golf Team.
The Mavericks, ninth in the latest West Regional rankings, will await the final seedings for the NCAA West Regional to be held in Amarillo, Texas on May 1-3. The top nine teams plus individuals are invited.
