Winkelmann Shuts Out NWMSU in Doubleheader Split

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team split its final doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday, defeating the Bearcats 7-0 before falling 4-3 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks are now 25-12 (21-11 MIAA), while NWMSU is 16-22 (15-17 MIAA).
Junior Brady Hohl led the way offensively, finishing 4-for-8 at the plate over the two games while scoring twice and driving in two runs.
Game 1 – UNO 7, NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 0
Junior Brandon Winkelmann (1-1) gave an outstanding effort on the mound, tossing a complete-game shutout while surrendering just two hits. He also fanned eight batters while walking two. NWMSU's Aaron Amaral (1-1) took the loss, giving up three runs – two earned – on four hits over 3.1 innings of work. Amaral managed four strikeouts with a trio of walks.
UNO took a one-run lead in the bottom of the third inning, as freshman Caleb Palensky drew a walk and then stole second. He moved to third on senior Jed Hanson's infield single, later scoring on junior Colby McCord's RBI single to right to make it 1-0.
The Mavericks extended their advantage in the fourth, helped by junior Martin Sartin, who reached on a hit-by-pitch. He moved around the bags – including a steal to third base – then scored, along with freshman Beau Suponchick, on Hohl's two-RBI single to left to go up 3-0.
Nebraska Omaha took complete control in the sixth, as junior Mark Waldron singled in Hohl for their Mavs' first run of the inning. McCord then doubled down the right field line to plate Hanson, and sophomore Tyler Splichal delivered a two-RBI single to right field that scored McCord and Waldron and pushed the final tally to 7-0.
McCord and Splichal each finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI, and McCord added a run scored. Hohl also chipped in two RBI and a run of his own.
GAME 2 – NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 4, UNO 3
Game two saw Northwest Missouri State take the early lead, going up 1-0 in the top of the first. Jake Kretzer gained his way on after being hit by a pitch, advancing to third on Geno DeAngelis' single to right field. Cameron Bedard then sent a single up the middle that plated Kretzer and gave the Bearcats their first lead of the day.
NWMSU added two more runs on three hits in the second, with Alex Singleton starting it off with a single up the middle. Alec Rosales and Kretzer then had back-to-back doubles, which scored Singleton and Rosales, respectively and pushed it to 3-0.
The Bearcats plated another run for the third consecutive inning, as Bedard singled through the right side and later came in on Evan Connell's RBI single to center that extended the Northwest advantage to 4-0.
The Mavericks finally responded in the bottom of the frame, opening with back-to-back singles by Suponchick and Hohl. The two runners moved over on Palensky's sacrifice bunt, and Suponchick scored when Hanson reached on a fielding error. Hohl later added a run of his own when Waldron grounded out to get the RBI and cut the score to 4-2.
UNO threatened in the bottom of the ninth, as senior Tyler Davies reached on a single to right center. Suponchick then tripled to deep center field to score Davies, narrowing it to a one-run ballgame. With Suponchick on third, Northwest Missouri State secured two more outs, cutting the Maverick rally and taking the 5-4 win.
Josh Parrish (2-0) earned the win, going 4.2 innings and giving up two runs – one earned – on four hits. Parris garnered five strikeouts and walked two. Sophomore Matt Tew (3-1) took the loss for UNO, throwing five innings and surrendering four runs on 10 hits. He struck out a pair of batters with two walks. NWMSU's Jayson Huett earned his seventh save of the year, tossing the last four innings and giving up one run on three hits with two Ks.
Hohl finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Suponchick tallied two hits and a run of his own.
UNO returns to action on Friday, April 22, traveling to Fort Hays State. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. in Hays, Kan.
