Hohl's Grand Slam Spurs Mavs to Victory; UNO Wins

HAYS, Kan. – The UNO baseball team battled to a pair of high-scoring wins on Friday afternoon, defeating Fort Hays State 17-8 and 26-20 at Larks Park. With the victories, the Mavericks are now 27-12 (23-11 MIAA) on the year, while FHSU drops to 20-18 (17-15 MIAA).
Over both games of the doubleheader, the two squads combined for 71 runs, 80 hits and 13 home runs. The most dramatic of the roundtrippers came from junior Brady Hohl, who hit his first career grand slam in the top of the 10th to give UNO the eventual 26-20 win in the second game.
Junior Colby McCord also lived by the long ball on Friday, as he finished with three home runs on the day. McCord scored four times and had a team-best 11 runs batted in, while Hohl and senior Jed Hanson finished with six RBI apiece for the day.
Additionally, Head Coach Bob Herold reached a major milestone in his coaching career, reaching his 400th win in the Mavericks' second-game victory. He joins the ranks of former UNO coaches Bob Gates (464-473) and Virgil Yelkin (439-196). Herold needs 65 more wins to pass Gates and become the winningest skipper in school history.
GAME 1 – UNO 17, FORT HAYS STATE 8
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (6-2) earned the win in game one, giving up eight runs – seven earned – off nine hits in 5.2 innings. Holtmeyer struck out 11 Tigers and walked two, which marked his fourth double-figure strikeout performance of the year. FHSU's Andy Lewton (4-5) took the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits over three innings with no walks and no strikeouts.
Seven of UNO's nine hitters in the lineup registered multiple-hit games, led by junior Mark Waldron's 3-for-3 effort with three runs scored and two RBI. Junior Brady Hohl was also 3-for-5 with a trio of runs, and juniors Martin Sartin and Brandon Winkelmann added three more hits apiece. In addition, junior Colby McCord was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a team-leading six runs driven in.
McCord singlehandedly gave UNO a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, sending out a two-run homer. The Mavs added four more runs in the third and another in the fourth. FHSU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth frame with one run, followed by three in the fifth.
Ahead 7-4, the Mavs tacked on four more in the sixth to stretch it to 11-4. The Tigers rallied for four scores of their own in the bottom of the inning, pulling it to 11-8.
UNO exploded for six more runs on six hits in the seventh, as freshman Beau Suponchick led off with a double to right center. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and was plated on Hohl's RBI single through the left side. Another wild pitch helped Hohl to second, and senior Jed Hanson walked to put two on for Waldron, who singled to left to bring in Hohl. McCord then delivered a three-run shot to right, and Sartin added a roundtripper of his own, finishing the game with the final score of 17-8.
GAME 2 – UNO 26, FORT HAYS STATE 20
Junior Cory Buckley (4-2) earned the win in relief in the nightcap, holding Fort Hays State scoreless and allowing one hit in the final 1.2 innings. Andy Hammeke (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs – three earned – on four hits over two innings of work.
The second game was an offensive show for both teams, as they combined for nine home runs. Six Mavericks accounted for homers – Hohl, Hanson, McCord, senior Tyler Davies, junior Trevor Gappa and sophomore Tyler Splichal – and McCord's was his third of the day. In all, FHSU and UNO had 49 total hits, 17 of which were extra-base knocks.
The Maverick pitching staff allowed just two walks in the game, while UNO drew 14 bases on balls from Fort Hays State.
The Tigers went up 5-0 in the bottom of the first, but the lead did not last long, as UNO came back for six runs in the top of the third. FHSU tied it at six-all in the bottom of the frame, and the Mavs immediately answered with two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to make it 12-6.
Each team added another run in the next two half-innings, and Hays chipped in three more scores in the bottom of the seventh to bring it to 13-10. Nebraska Omaha notched another five runs in the eighth to go up 18-10, and another trio of runs from FHSU in the bottom of the frame made it 18-15.
After a scoreless top of the ninth – one of only three innings where the Mavericks did not score at least one run – Fort Hays State rallied off a five-run effort in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 18-18.
Yet again, the home team's lead was short-lived, as the Mavericks totaled six runs in the top of the 10th. Gappa and Suponchick each singled, and Winkelmann reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases for the hot-hitting Hohl. The junior then smashed a grand slam – the first of his career – over the left field wall to put the Mavs ahead at 24-20. Patrick Campbell then drew a walk – the 14th of the game for the Mavericks and their 20th of the day. A two-run homer to left by Davies finished off the scoring at 26-20.
UNO returns to action for the final doubleheader of the Fort Hays State series this weekend on Saturday, April 23. First pitch is set for Noon at Larks Park in Hays, Kan.
