Mavs Finish Wild Weekend at FHSU, Fall 6-4 and 17-

HAYS, Kan. – The wild scoring weekend for the UNO baseball team continued Saturday, as the Mavericks dropped both games of a doubleheader at Fort Hays State 6-4 and 17-7 in the series finale at Larks Park. Nebraska Omaha is now 27-14 (23-13 MIAA), while FHSU improves to 22-18 (19-15 MIAA).
Just a day after UNO and FHSU combined for 80 hits, 71 runs and 13 home runs – and Maverick head coach Bob Herold earned his 400th career win – the hit parade continued. The two squads finished Saturday with 48 hits and 37 runs. For the four-game weekend series, the Mavs and the Tigers had 128 hits, 108 runs and 14 homers.
GAME 1 – FORT HAYS STATE 6, UNO 4
Connor Beer (6-3) earned the win in game one, giving up four runs – three earned – on eight hits over six innings. Beer struck out five while walking four, while reliever Brett Macari took home his ninth save with the final inning of work, striking out one while keeping the Mavs in check with one hit. Derek Landis (3-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Sophomore Tyler Splichal hit his fifth home run of the year before leaving the game due to injury while in the field. Senior Tyler Davies stepped in in his place, finishing 2-for-2 with a run scored and one run driven in. Junior Colby McCord was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Splichal's homer to left in the top of the second inning put the Mavs up 1-0. Fort Hays State quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, notching three runs on four hits. Sloan Soulia led off with a single up the middle, and Anthony Salinas later doubled down the left field line to score Soulia and tie the game. Sheldon Howell then singled to right to plate Salinas, and Chris Santoscoy singled to left to drive in Macari and put the Tigers ahead 3-1.
Davies led off the fourth inning with a single to center, later coming in on freshman Beau Suponchick's RBI double to right center. Behind by one, UNO knotted the score at 3-3 in the fifth. Junior Mark Waldron drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, and McCord drove him in on an RBI single up the middle.
FHSU regained the lead in the sixth with a trio of runs on three hits. Soulia again led off with a single through the left side, and another Salinas double to the left side brought him in. Salinas then stole third, and Howell walked to put two runners on for Santoscoy, who sent a two-run double to right center to make it 6-3.
The Mavericks managed one more run in the seventh, as Waldron reached on an error and later scored on a Davies single to right. It was not enough, however, as Fort Hays State held on for the 6-4 victory.
GAME 2 – FORT HAYS STATE 17, UNO 7 (8 INN.)
Though the Mavericks nearly matched FHSU's 16 hits with 14 of their own, the Tigers capitalized on eight walks in game two.
Macari (3-0) earned the win with a 6.1-inning effort, giving up seven runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Junior Andrew Reck (1-3) was credited with the loss after two-thirds of an inning in relief of starting pitcher Tom Schmidt. Schmidt went five innings and had a season-high seven strikeouts for the day. FHSU's Tyler Treinen grabbed his second save of the year, finishing the contest with a scoreless 1.2 innings of work.
Nebraska Omaha enjoyed a 3-1 advantage until the bottom of the fifth, when Fort Hays State came back for four runs to take the lead at 4-3. The Mavs went back ahead 5-4 in the top of the sixth, but it was short-lived, as FHSU pounded out another five runs in the bottom half of the inning to stretch it to 10-4.
UNO cut the score to 10-7 in the top of the seventh, and the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Another four runs in the eighth put it away at 17-7, and the game was called due to the 10-run rule in effect.
Waldron and freshman Caleb Palensky led the Mavs offensively in the second contest, as both finished 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI. Palensky also added a run scored, while junior Trevor Gappa scored twice and was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Additionally, junior Brady Hohl was 2-for-4 with a run scored, improving his hitting streak to a team-best 15 games this season.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, April 27, hosting in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Werner Park, and it marks the first collegiate game at the brand-new ballpark.
