Lopers Top UNO 8-5 in Historic Game at Werner Park

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team made its debut at Werner Park on Wednesday night, falling 8-5 to in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney. The Mavericks are now 27-15 (23-13 MIAA), while the Lopers improve to 27-12 (21-8 RMAC).
The contest marked the first collegiate game played at Werner Park -- the home of the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers – which opened in early April. UNK and UNO also enjoyed a season-best home crowd for the Mavericks, as 2,033 fans were in attendance for the historic event.
Nebraska-Kearney's Mike Loseke (6-0) earned the win, going 5.0 innings while surrendering five runs – four earned – on eight hits. Loseke struck out four and allowed one walk. UNO's Brandon Winkelmann (1-2) took the loss, giving up five runs – two earned – off seven hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Junior Brady Hohl led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. He also extended his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest of any Maverick this season. Hohl now has 10 multiple-hit games during the span of his current streak and his 17th such performance this season.
Junior Colby McCord also batted 2-for-4 with a run scored, while junior Mark Waldron accounted for a pair of RBI. As a team, UNO had nine hits, while UNK finished with 12.
After a 40-minute rain delay in the first inning, Kearney took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second, tallying four hits while seizing on two errors. Jason Trulin reached on a fielding error and advanced to third on Tim Urban's single to right, followed by Daren Grace's RBI double to left that plated Trulin. Urban then came in on a passed ball, and Luke Valerius added a sacrifice fly that scored Grace. Back-to-back singles allowed Brandon Buchanan to chip in another run, pushing the score to 4-0.
In the bottom of the frame, UNO responded with four runs of its own to knot the game at 4-4. McCord led off with a single to right, and senior Tyler Davies also singled to the same spot, advancing on the throw. A throwing error on the same play moved Davies to third and allowed McCord to score, bringing it to 4-1. Waldron then sent a two-run triple to deep right center, plating Sartin and Davies and cutting the margin to one. Hohl added an infield single and drove in Waldron, making it 4-4.
UNK notched a run in the fourth and one more in the fifth, going up 6-4. In the bottom of the fifth, Nebraska Omaha chipped in one run on three hits to keep the score in check. Hohl started it off with an infield single, later coming in on senior Jed Hanson's RBI groundout to cut it to 6-5.
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth, when Nebraska-Kearney tacked on two more runs. Trulin again reached on an error, followed by an Urban single to right and a walk by Grace. Valerius then singled through the left side to score both Trulin and Urban, giving the Lopers their eventual winning score of 8-5.
UNO returns to action April 29-30, traveling to Truman. The conference series was originally set for Saturday and Sunday but was moved up to a Friday/Saturday schedule due to rain forecasted for the Kirksville, Mo., area. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m., while Saturday's two games will begin at 1 p.m.
