KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UNO baseball team swept a doubleheader at Truman on Friday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs 5-1 and 10-1 at the Bulldog Baseball Park. With the wins, the Mavericks are now 29-15 (25-13 MIAA), while TSU drops to 16-26 (15-23 MIAA).
GAME 1 – UNO 5, TRUMAN 1
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (7-2) tossed an eight-strikeout one-hitter, matching his one-hit performance against the Bulldogs in 2010. Holtmeyer went all seven innings – maintaining a no-hitter until the bottom of the seventh, when TSU had an infield hit that broke up the hitless effort.
Kyle Beazey (2-7) took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits. Beazey, who struck out nine batters and allowed just one walk, was relieved in the seventh inning by Michael Staihr.
UNO jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth innings, tallying six hits. Freshman Beau Suponchick, junior Brady Hohl and freshman Caleb Palensky chipped in three consecutive singles to start it off, followed by senior Jed Hanson's two-RBI single to right that made it 2-0. Junior Colby McCord added another single up the middle that scored Palensky, and an immediate double down the left field line from junior Brandon Winkelmann brought in Hanson to push it to 4-0.
The Mavericks added another run in the fifth, as Hohl earned his way on after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to third on Hanson's single to left, then scored on senior Tyler Davies' RBI knock to the same place, extending the lead to 5-0.
Truman managed its first and only hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh, and Jewett scored on a throwing error for the Bulldogs' only offensive mark of the game. Holtmeyer finished it off, however, capturing the third out with his final strikeout of the day for the 5-1 win.
GAME 2 – UNO 10, TRUMAN 1
Senior Ben Brown (5-1) earned the win in game two, giving up one run on six hits over seven innings. Brown struck out six batters and walked two, while relievers Cory Buckley and Andrew Reck each had a pair of strikeouts. TSU's Tyler Stefan (2-6) was credited with the loss, surrendering four runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings. Stefan allowed two walks and fanned five batters.
Junior Trevor Gappa had an outstanding performance at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Junior Martin Sartin also tallied a 3-for-4 outing with three RBI and a run scored, while five Mavericks finished with two hits apiece. As a team, UNO had 17 hits in the nightcap and held TSU to six hits.
TSU took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Rose singled to right and eventually scored on a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. UNO responded in the sixth, when Palensky sent a leadoff double to left center. Winkelmann later singled through the left side to plate Palensky and tie the game at 1-1.
The Mavericks tacked on three more runs on five hits in the seventh. Gappa led off with a single up the middle, and singles by Suponchick and Hohl helped Gappa score and put UNO up 2-1. Palensky's bunt single advanced both runners, and Hanson's RBI single to right scored Suponchick. Hohl then came around on McCord's RBI groundout, giving Nebraska Omaha the 4-1 advantage.
In the eighth inning, Davies and Gappa swiftly put up two more runs, as the duo sent back-to-back homers over the wall in right center and extended it to 6-1. The Mavs notched four more runs in the ninth, highlighted by Sartin's three-run roundtripper that scored Gappa and Winkelmann. Additionally, Hanson – who led off with a single up the middle – was plated on Winkelmann's RBI single, leaving UNO with a final score of 10-1.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, April 30 for the series finale at Truman. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Bulldog Baseball Park in Kirksville, Mo.
