KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UNO baseball team split its doubleheader at Truman on Saturday, falling 4-0 before taking the series finale, 5-3. The Mavericks are now 30-16 (26-14 MIAA), while TSU is 17-27 (16-24 MIAA).
GAME 1 – TRUMAN 4, UNO 0
Truman's Christian Witt (4-1) proved a tough match-up for UNO, as he held the Mavericks to just two hits in a complete-game shutout. Witt went all seven innings, striking out 12 and walking only one batter. Derek Landis (3-3) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits while striking out four over 4.0 innings of work. Landis did, however, hold the Bulldogs' to one base hit for the game -- a double by Luke Crader, who finished 2-for-3.
TSU scored all four of its runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Crader got it rolling with a double down the left field line and later scored on Dan Plecki's single to left. Two more hits by Daniel Jewett and Jordan Howe helped Plecki to come around, followed by Bryce Bond's two-run single to right that plated Howe and Jewett. It was all the offense the Bulldogs needed, as they held on for the 4-0 win and avoided a series sweep.
GAME 2 – UNO 5, TRUMAN 3
Truman took the lead first in the second game, going up 1-0 in the second inning. Nebraska Omaha responded immediately the top of the third, as freshman Beau Suponchick sent a leadoff home run over the left field wall. Junior Brady Hohl then drew a walk and later scored on junior Martin Sartin's RBI single through the left side, pushing the Mavs ahead at 2-1.
TSU came back for another run in the third, tallying three hits for the frame. Reese scored on an error, knotting the score at 2-2.
In the fourth inning, UNO tacked on a pair of runs to regain its advantage. Junior Trevor Gappa started it off with a single to left, later coming in on Hohl's RBI single to the same spot. After a pitching change, senior Jed Hanson came up with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch, allowing Suponchick to score and extending the Mavs' lead to 4-2.
Nebraska Omaha put up an insurance run in the seventh when Hanson led off with a homer to left center, pushing the score to 5-2. Truman countered with Pete Jurich's homer to left in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the Mavericks, who earned the 5-3 win.
Sophomore Matt Tew (4-1) earned the victory on the hill, giving up three runs – two earned – off nine hits. Tew threw 6.1 innings, striking out six and walking two. Drew Garwood (0-1) was credited with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits. He lasted 3.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. UNO's Andrew Reck also grabbed his second save of the year with 1.2 innings of relief work, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts and a walk.
Hohl led the way at the plate in game two, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Suponchick also accounted for two runs scored and an RBI.
UNO returns to action May 7-8, hosting Missouri Western for its final home series of the 2011 season. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town, while Sunday's games will begin at Noon.
