OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team split its doubleheader with Missouri Western on Saturday, falling 8-4 in extra innings before earning a 2-1 win. The Mavericks are now 31-17 (27-15 MIAA), while MWSU is 24-22 (23-18 MIAA).
Saturday's doubleheader also marked Senior Day for UNO's five seniors – Ben Brown, Tyler Davies, Jed Hanson Travis Jacobi, and Mark Johnson – who were honored with festivities between games to celebrate their Maverick careers.
GAME 1 – MISSOURI WESTERN 8, UNO 4 (8 INN.)
Missouri Western took the first game by a score of 8-4 in extra innings. Ryan Carbah (2-3) earned the win in relief, holding UNO scoreless in the final 2.2 innings while striking out four batters and allowing four walks.
Junior Cory Buckley took the loss, giving up four runs – two earned – in 1.2 innings of relief work. Starter Joe Holtmeyer fanned six batters over six innings and walked just one.
Nebraska Omaha scored a run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first, an RBI single up the middle by junior Mark Waldron scored Hanson for the Mavericks' first tally of the game. In the second inning, sophomore Connor McCrite, who had been out due to injury since April 12, returned to the lineup in style with a home run to right field. The roundtripper – McCrite's second of the year -- pushed it to 2-0.
MWSU tied it in the fourth when Ian Atkinson walked and Shockley promptly homered to left, making it 2-2. The Griffons added another run in the fifth, as Atkinson's double to left center score Scott Groner and put Missouri Western up, 3-2.
UNO regained the lead in the fifth, chipping in a pair of runs on three hits. Freshman Beau Suponchick got on with a bunt single and advanced to second on a balk – one of five balks for the game – and freshman Caleb Palensky' singled him in to knot the score at 3-3. Palensky also advanced to second on a balk, and senior Jed Hanson singled up the middle to plate Palensky and push the Mavs ahead at 4-3.
Missouri Western tied it again in the sixth, as Jason Solma doubled down the left field line and came in on Kyle Peterson's RBI knock through the right side. The score remained 4-4 and forced the game to extra innings, allowing the Griffons to storm back for four runs in the eighth and the eventual 8-4 victory.
MWSU's Solma finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Spencer Shockley was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
GAME 2 – UNO 2, MISSOURI WESTERN 1 (7 INN.)
In accordance with MIAA rules, the second game of the doubleheader became a seven-inning contest after the first one went into extra innings.
Missouri Western struck in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on two Maverick errors to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks responded immediately, as junior Brady Hohl led off with a double down the left field line. Palensky's bunt single advanced Hohl to third, and Hanson's sacrifice fly allowed him to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams were nearly silent until the fifth, when UNO scored the only other run it would need for a win. Davies singled up the middle, and a double down the right field line from Suponchick brought Davies around from first base and made it 2-1.
Brown (6-1) did his part on the mound, holding the Griffons to just three hits while earning the complete-game win. Brown threw all seven innings, allowing just one unearned run, with four strikeouts and two walks. MWSU's Brandon Simmons (6-6) took the loss, surrendering two runs on six hits over six innings of work. Simmons had five strikeouts for the day while walking one.
UNO returns to action on Sunday, May 8, hosting Missouri Western for the series finale at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The doubleheader is set for a Noon first pitch, and it marks the Mavericks' final home games of the 2011 season.
