Mavs Close Regular Season With 13-2 Win Over MWSU

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team split its doubleheader against Missouri Western on Sunday, dropping a 6-3 loss before storming back to a 13-2 win in seven innings at the Ballpark at Boys Town. Now finished with the regular-season portion of their schedule, the Mavericks are 32-18 (28-16 MIAA), while MWSU is 25-23 (24-19 MIAA).
Nebraska Omaha's two victories this weekend helped the squad to its seventh straight season with 30 or more wins.
Junior Mark Waldron led the Mavericks' offensive attack, finishing a combined 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and six runs driven in. Junior Brady Hohl notched five runs and four RBI and hit his fifth home run of the season.
GAME 1 – MISSOURI WESTERN 6, UNO 3
Nik Jurado (7-2) earned the complete-game win in the first contest, allowing three runs on seven hits. Jurado totaled six strikeouts with six walks over seven innings. UNO's Derek Landis (3-4) took the loss, giving up five runs – four earned – on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Junior Mark Waldron finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while senior Tyler Davies was 2-for-3 with one run driven in. MWSU's Spencer Shockley registered a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and a trio of RBI.
Missouri Western jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with Nate Jones singling down the right field line and later capitalizing on a Maverick error to score.
UNO grabbed the lead in the bottom of the frame, notching two runs on two hits. Hohl led off with a single through the left side and stole second, followed by a walk from freshman Caleb Palensky. Senior Jed Hanson's groundout put both runners into scoring position, and Waldron's two-run single up the middle made it 2-1.
The Griffons came back in the third, as Shockley sent a two-run home run over the left field wall to regain a 3-2 advantage. Nebraska Omaha knotted the game at 3-3 in the fourth when Davies had an RBI single to right that scored Waldron.
Missouri Western put its final three runs on the board in the top of the fifth. Jones drew a walk and later came in on Shockley's single through the left side, and Shockley and Jason Solma were both plated on Kyle Peterson's two-run single up the middle. It was all the scoring the Griffons would need, as they hung on for the 6-3 victory.
GAME 2 – UNO 13, MISSOURI WESTERN 2 (7 INN.)
The Mavericks stormed out to a four-run p1lead in the first inning of game two and never relinquished the advantage to the Griffons. Hohl drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then came in on a double by senior Jed Hanson. Waldron added another double to left center and advanced to third, clearing the bases and scoring Hanson and Palensky. Waldron then tallied the Mavs' last run of the inning on junior Colby McCord's sacrifice fly and pushed the score to 4-0.
Missouri Western came back in the second, as Peterson homered over the scoreboard in left field to make it 4-1.
Nebraska Omaha chipped in another run in the second, with Hohl scoring on Palensky's sacrifice fly that moved the score to 5-1. Western added a run of its own in the third, bringing it to 5-2.
UNO exploded for five runs on six hits in the fourth, highlighted by Hohl's two-run single through the right side that scored McCord and freshman Beau Suponchick.
In the sixth, pinch-hitter Martin Sartin got on with a single to right, and Hohl followed up with a two-run homer to left, extending the lead to 13-2. UNO held the Griffons scoreless in the seventh, earning the win by way of the MIAA's 10-run rule.
Sophomore Matt Tew (5-1) captured the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts over seven innings. MWSU's Oliver Kadey (4-5) took the loss, giving up three runs on two hits with a walk. Kadey left the game in the first inning after a collision in the field.
Hohl and Waldron each finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, with Hohl scoring four times and Waldron twice. Hanson, Palensky and McCrite also had multi-hit games, as each player registered a pair of hits, and Palensky and Hanson both scored twice.
UNO, which has clinched a No. 3 seed for the conference tournament, returns to action on Thursday, March 12, traveling to the MIAA Championship. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. A complete bracket and tournament schedule will be released by the MIAA early this week.
