UNO Storms to 11-1 Win Over Washburn at MIAA Tourn

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The No. 3 seed UNO baseball team opened the MIAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon, storming to an 11-1 win over sixth-seeded Washburn. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 33-18 on the year, while the Ichabods finish their season at 22-28.
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (8-2) had a strong outing on the mound, allowing one unearned run on three hits over 6.1 innings. Holtmeyer, UNO's all-time career strikeouts leader, fanned seven WU hitters, bringing his career total to 323 strikeouts. Washburn's Brett Ash (7-5) took the loss, surrendering seven runs – three earned – on nine hits. Ash had five strikeouts and a pair of walks over 5.2 innings pitched.
Junior Brady Hohl led the Mavericks' offensive attack, finishing 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored. Sophomore Tyler Splichal (2-for-4) and freshmen Caleb Palensky (2-for-3) and Beau Suponchick (2-for-3) also had multiple-hit performances. Palensky also drove in three runs, while Splichal had two RBI, and Suponchick scored twice.
Nebraska Omaha plated runs in the first, third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, forcing the game to finish in eight innings due to the 10-run rule. Washburn mustered its sole run of the contest in the top of the third.
UNO jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Hohl led off with a single to right, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on a groundout by senior Jed Hanson, giving the Mavs a narrow advantage.
Washburn tied it at 1-1 in the third when Travis Cruz drew a leadoff walk and moved around on a throwing error and a bunt single. Cruz came in on Blake Boling's sacrifice fly to center, cutting off the Maverick lead.
Suponchick and Hohl got the ball rolling in the bottom of the frame, as the duo had back-to-back singles to put two on for Palensky. The MIAA Freshman of the Year honoree then doubled to right center, plating Suponchick and putting the Mavs back on top, 2-1. Hohl added another run when Hanson had an RBI groundout, stretching it to 3-1.
In the sixth inning, UNO keyed three hits and took advantage of three Ichabod errors to score four more runs. Waldron walked to start things off, followed by a single from senior Travis Jacobi, who advanced to third on an error and pushed Waldron to score. Splichal's RBI single to left center then allowed Jacobi to cross the plate and made it 5-1. Suponchick and Hohl reached on back-to-back error, and Suponchick and Splichal both scored on Palensky's two-run knock to right, improving the margin to 7-1.
Splichal was responsible for another RBI in the seventh, as he doubled to left center and helped Jacobi to score and make it 8-1.
The eighth and final inning sealed it for the Mavericks, who chipped in three runs on four hits to finish the game at 11-1. Junior Colby McCord led off with a single to left, and a pinch-hitting Patrick Campbell drew a walk. Hohl then singled to right to load the bases for pinch hitter Martin Sartin, who sent a two-run single to right to score McCord and Campbell. Hanson capped the game with an RBI single to left that scored Hohl and gave UNO the last run it needed for an opening-round win.
With the win, Nebraska Omaha is now 2-1 in MIAA Tournament history. The Mavericks went 1-1 at the annual championship last year before advancing to the NCAA South Central Regional.

The Hornets, who are ranked sixth in the nation, earned the No. 2 seed after finishing the regular season with a record of 41-8 (37-7 MIAA). First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., and the tournament will switch to a double-elimination format.
