Mavs Drop 5-0 Loss to Emporia State at MIAA Tourna

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The No. 3 seed UNO baseball team dropped a 5-0 loss to second-seeded Emporia State at the MIAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Though still alive in the double-elimination format that began today, the Mavericks move to the losers bracket and will face Missouri Western tonight at 7 p.m.
With the loss, Nebraska Omaha is now 33-19 on the year, while regular-season co-champion ESU improves to 42-8.
Derek Brooks (7-2) earned the win with a complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits over nine innings.
Brooks struck out four batters and walked one. UNO's Ben Brown (6-2) took the loss, surrendering five runs – four earned – on seven hits over six innings of work. Brown had three strikeouts to his credit, while reliever Tom Schmidt added another trio of Ks while holding the Hornets to one hit over the last two innings.
Junior Brady Hohl led the Mavs at the plate, accounting for three of their four hits for the afternoon.
Emporia State went up 1-0 in the first inning, as Jacob White scored when Dillon Hazlett reached on a fielder's choice. In the second frame, the Hornets added four more runs on three hits and capitalized on two UNO errors to push the advantage to the final of 5-0.
ESU finished with eight hits – all singles -- to the Mavericks' four. For the game, the Hornets left nine runners stranded.
UNO returns to action tonight against fifth-seeded Missouri Western in an elimination game. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
