OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team shut out Nebraska-Kearney in a midweek non-conference matchup, defeating the Lopers 5-0 at the Ballpark at Boys Town on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 19-6 (15-5 MIAA), while nationally-ranked UNK drops to 19-7 (15-3 RMAC) on the year.
Sophomore Matt Tew (2-0) earned the win, surrendering just two hits with a pair of strikeouts over 2.2 innings of work. UNK's Andre O'Connor took the loss, giving up four runs – two earned – on four hits. O'Connor fanned three batters with three walks over three innings. As a staff, the seven Maverick pitchers held Kearney to six hits on the day.
Freshman Caleb Palensky finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Palensky hit his second home run of the year to put the Mavs on the board early.
The Mavericks scored first in the bottom of the second inning, starting the offensive push with Palensky's two-run homer to left field that also brought in senior Travis Jacobi. Senior Tyler Davies then reached on an error and advanced to third on another miscue, and junior Brady Hohl sent a double down the left field line to put UNO up 3-0.
Nebraska Omaha plated another run in the third. Junior Martin Sartin singled to right, moved around the bases and scored when Davies was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 4-0.
Both squads were silent until the eighth, when UNO tacked on one more run. Sophomore Connor McCrite doubled down the right field line and advanced on a Palensky single through the left side, then scored on Davies' sacrifice fly for the final score of 5-0.
UNO returns to action on Friday, April 8, hosting nationally-ranked Central Missouri. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
