Mavericks Fall to No. 6 Central Missouri

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team dropped a pair of conference games to No. 6 Central Missouri, falling 6-1 and 9-8 at the Ballpark at Boys Town on Friday afternoon. The Mavericks are n now 19-8 (15-7 MIAA) on the year, while UCM improves to 26-4 (21-3 MIAA).
Senior Jed Hanson went 4-for-8 for the day, putting up two doubles with two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman Beau Suponchick chipped in four RBI in the doubleheader.
GAME 1 – CENTRAL MISSOURI 6, UNO 1
UCM's Don Lisi (7-0) earned the win with a seven-inning, complete-game win, allowing just one run on seven hits. Lisi had three strikeouts and allowed no walks on the day. UNO's Joe Holtmeyer (4-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs – four earned – on six hits. Holtmeyer fanned four batters and walked four.
Central Missouri got on the board first, stringing together four straight hits to start the inning. Bret Schwartz led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Albert Selanders' single to right center. Tyler Ruch then singled to second base and Nick DeBiasse earned his way on with a bunt single. Selanders was plated on Will Mulligan's RBI groundout, and Ruch came in on Frank Specht's sacrifice bunt, giving UCM a 3-0 lead.
The Mules tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Matt LaGree doubled down the left field line to spark the offense, and Tyler Anthony walked to put two runners on. Schwartz then reached on an error, which allowed both LaGree and Anthony to score and extend the advantage to 5-0.
UNO made its first noise in the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Connor McCrite led off with a single up the middle. Freshman Caleb Palensky then singled through the right side, and both runners moved over on junior Martin Sartin's sacrifice bunt. McCrite scored the Mavs' first and only run of the game on a groundout by Suponchick, making it 5-1.
UCM added one more run in the top of the seventh, as Anthony led off with a walk and later came in on Ruch's RBI single to center for the final score of 6-1.
GAME 2 – CENTRAL MISSOURI 9, UNO 8
Game two proved a battle, as UCM took a commanding 5-0 lead, but UNO came back to tie it until the ninth inning.
Hanson went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while junior Brady Hohl finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the second game. Palensky and senior Travis Jacobi registered two hits apiece, and Jacobi added two RBI. Additionally, Suponchick chipped in three RBI of his own.
Central Missouri's Aaron Baker (1-1) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Junior Brandon Winkelmann took the loss for UNO, giving up one run on one hit over an inning of work.
Senior Ben Brown started the game for UNO, allowing seven runs – five earned – on seven hits while striking out four and walking one. Junior Tom Schmidt came in in relief for Brown, giving up one run on a pair of hits with four strikeouts over four innings.
The Mavericks took UCM starter Lee Stoppelman for nine hits in four innings and had another six over reliever Adam Maddox. As a team, UNO outhit Central Missouri, 16-10.
UCM jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning, totaling five hits. UNO responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, as Hohl started it off with an infield single, and Hanson added another flare to center. The duo scored on Jacobi's two-RBI single through the right side, making it 5-2.
The Mules capitalized on three Maverick errors in the fourth inning, as Ruch and Schwartz both came in to maintain the lead at 7-2. Nebraska Omaha added two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, with Hohl and Splichal sending out back-to-back singles. Hanson then doubled to right to score both runners, bringing the Mavs within three.
After UCM pushed its advantage to 8-4, UNO stormed back for three runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Palensky, Sartin and McCrite singled consecutively to load the bases for Suponchick, who sent a double deep down the right field line. All three runners came in on the play, making it 8-7.
The Mavs added one more run in the sixth, when Hanson doubled to left and later scored on a fielding error to knot the game at 8-8. The tie stayed in place until the ninth, when DeBiasse doubled to left center and came in on a fielding error. It proved to be the only run UCM needed, as it took the win at 9-8.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, April 9 against Central Missouri. The final two games of the series will be played in a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
