Mavs Shut Out UCM 10-0 in Series Finale

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team split its doubleheader with No. 6 Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon, falling 10-6 before taking a 10-0 victory in seven innings in the series finale at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks are now 20-9 (16-8 MIAA), while nationally-ranked UCM is 27-5 (22-4 MIAA) on the year.
As a team, the Mavs combined for 24 hits on the day, including eight extra-base knocks. Senior Jed Hanson went 4-for-8 with two RBI and scoring three times in the doubleheader.
Central Missouri's Nick DeBiasse led the Mules at the plate, finishing 4-for-6 with a double and a home run, while adding four RBI and a stolen base.
GAME 1 – CENTRAL MISSOURI 10, UNO 6
UCM attacked early again, as Bret Schwartz led off the game with a triple to deep left center. Tyler Ruch later drew a walk, and DeBiasse drove a double to right center to score Schwartz. Ruch then came in on Will Mulligan's groundout, putting the Mules up 2-0.
In the second inning, Albert Selanders drew a walk, followed by a two-run smash over the wall in left center by DeBiasse. Mulligan came after DeBiasse in the lineup and sent another homer out in the same place, extending the UCM lead to 5-0.
UNO got on the board in the bottom of the third, when senior Travis Jacobi and freshman Beau Suponchick both homered to left field to make it 5-2.
Central Missouri tacked on two more runs in the fourth, as Anthony and Kevin Gratza put up back-to-back singles to earn their way on. Selanders then singled through the left to plate Gratza, and Anthony came in on a wild pitch to push it to 7-2.
UNO came right back for two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, with three straight singles by Hanson, junior Mark Waldron and sophomore Colby McCord. McCord's hit scored Hanson, and Waldron came around on another single to center by Jacobi. The Mavs scored another pair in the fifth, starting with junior Martin Sartin's double down the right field and his subsequent score on junior Brady Hohl's RBI single to left center. Sophomore Tyler Splichal then singled to right center, bringing in Hohl to make it a one-run ballgame at 7-6.
The Mules would not surrender, however, as they added three more runs on three hits in the sixth. Anthony drew a walk, and Selanders and Ruch both doubled to left, with Anthony scoring on Selanders' hit. Selanders came around on Ruch's double, and DeBiasse then singled to right, allowing Ruch to tally another run for the final score of 10-6.
UCM's Matt Curtis (6-0) earned the win, surrendering six runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings of work. Curtis struck out two and had no walks in remaining undefeated. Junior Cory Buckley took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 3.0 innings. Travis Unthank came in in relief for Curtis, throwing 2.2 innings for his second save of the year.
GAME 2 – UNO 10, CENTRAL MISSOURI 0
In the series, finale, the Mavericks stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Hohl sending a leadoff double down the left field line. Hanson added another double down the right field line to score Hohl, and Waldron and McCord reached base on a hit-by-pitch and a fielding error, respectively. Freshman Caleb Palensky then cleared the bases with a double off the wall in left center, scoring Hanson, Waldron and McCord to make it 4-0.
The advantage stretched to 6-0 in the fifth, as Suponchick started it off with a double to left center. Hanson then singled and advanced to second on an error, helping Suponchick to score. Hanson immediately came around on Waldron's RBI single through the left side to add another run.
Three more runs came in off four hits in the sixth, taking it out to 9-0. The final nail came down in the seventh, when Waldron and Palensky had a pair of singles, and Waldron scored on senior Tyler Davies' sacrifice fly. With the 10-0 score, the Mavericks became the first team since 2009 to shut out Central Missouri and deal the Mules a loss by the 10-run rule.
UNO's Matt Tew (3-0) earned the victory – his second of the week -- with six innings of shutout ball, giving up just two hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks. UCM's Kurtis Schuyler (1-1) took the loss after 4.2 innings of work, giving up six runs – four earned – on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Palensky finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Hohl, Hanson and Waldron all finished with two hits and two runs scored. Hanson and Splichal also registered two RBI apiece.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, April 12, traveling to Northwest Missouri State. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
