KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The No. 3 seed UNO baseball team extended its stay at the MIAA Tournament Friday night, taking a 10-5 win over fifth-seeded Missouri Western in an elimination game at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 34-19 on the year, while MWSU finishes its season at 26-25.
Junior Mark Waldron led the way with a 4-for-6 performance at the plate, scoring once and driving in a pair of runs. Senior Travis Jacobi added a 3-for-4 night with a walk and a run scored. Junior Martin Sartin (3-for-4, two runs), freshman Caleb Palensky (2-for-6, two runs, three RBI) and sophomore Tyler Splichal (2-for-5, one run) also tallied multiple hits in the nightcap.
Sophomore Matt Tew (6-1) earned the win, giving up three earned runs on nine hits. Tew went five innings while fanning four batters and walking another four. MWSU's Nik Jurado (7-3) took the loss, surrendering 10 runs – nine earned – on 14 hits over 3.1 innings of work.
As a team, UNO pounded out 19 hits, including two doubles by Palensky and a triple by senior Jed Hanson. Missouri Western totaled five runs on 11 hits for the night.
With the game tied 2-2, the Mavericks exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth to take a 10-2 advantage. The Griffons managed one run in the bottom of the fifth and another two in the seventh but were unable to overcome the Mavs' solid lead and fell 10-5.
Nebraska Omaha is now 3-2 in MIAA Tournament history. The Mavericks advance to semifinal action on Saturday, facing the winner of the Central Missouri-Emporia State game at 11 a.m. First pitch for UNO's game is set for 3 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
