State's Leading Scorer Mendez is First Men's Socce

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO men's soccer head coach Jason Mims announced on Friday the first official signee in program history, Grand Island star forward Logan Mendez.
Mendez was the state's leading scorer in 2011, racking up 28 goals and 11 assists for the Islanders, who finished 19-1 after falling in the Class A state championship game to Creighton Prep, 2-1, in the school's first-ever state finals appearance.
The 5-10, 165-pound Mendez got the Islanders on the board first in the game with his state-best 28th goal of the year, but the Junior Jays scored twice in the second half to end the Islanders' undefeated season.
Mendez was named the honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska team and honorary co-captain of the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State team at season's end. He also earned All-Heartland Conference honors and was selected to play in the Shrine Soccer Classic in June. Mendez also received All-State honorable mention following his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons, while this season's All-State awards come out on Sunday.
"It's always been my dream to play Division I," Mendez said. "It's close to home and it's a new program, and all the new players that are coming in are going to be full of energy and enthusiasm to play Division I soccer. I don't think it could be any better for me."
Mendez, an honor roll member, is the first Grand Island soccer player in 21 years to receive a Division I scholarship.
"Logan is a tremendous competitor who hates to lose. He had a remarkable year as he led his Grand Island High School soccer team to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the state championship game," Mims said. "His best soccer is ahead of him and we are excited to have the No. 1 goal scorer in the state of Nebraska join the UNO family."
