Mavs Shine in 1-1 Draw at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska Omaha women's soccer team tied Creighton 1-1 in an exhibition Saturday night at Morrison Stadium before 813 in attendance.
Maggie Olson's second-half header off of a corner kick gave the Mavs the draw against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions in a match where UNO outplayed the Bluejays in the second half.
The result surely will give the Mavs confidence heading into their first season of Division I play this fall. Creighton, the defending Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament champions, returned its top four scorers from its 15-4-2 squad last year.
Creighton controlled possession for most of the first half. Andrea Zuniga got the Jays on the board with a 35-yard shot over goalkeeper Katelyn Tschida's head 7:21 into the match. The Jays continued to attack, and the crossbar bailed out the Mavs with 17 minutes left in the half on a rip by Sarah Kendall, then Tschida saved the one-goal deficit with a tip over the crossbar on a 30-yard shot by Beth Fyles.
With just under four minutes left in the half, the Mavs' Monica Bosiljevac found space in the box but sent a left-footed shot from 12 yards out wide of the goal. The Jays finished the half with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-2 advantage in shots.
But the Mavs came out strong in the second half and held the ball in Creighton's half of the field for most of the half. UNO produced a handful of quality scoring chances before finally drawing even.
Thirteen minutes into the half, Katie Pickinpaugh sent in a right-footed cross from the left wing that bounced in the box over the head of a Creighton defender, and Danielle Archuleta jumped up to get a head on it, but her shot went just right of the goal.
Three minutes later, Bosiljevac sent in a cross from the right wing, and this time Pickinpaugh got her head on it from nine yards out, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.
The Mavs didn't need much longer to finally draw even. With 27 minutes remaining in the match, Archuleta got free on a breakway, but she was pulled down just outside the 18-yard box, resulting in a yellow card for Creighton's Katie Murphy. Pickinpaugh's ensuing free kick forced a save over the crossbar by Creighton keeper Katie Jo Swanson, setting up a Maverick corner kick. Bosiljevac played the corner in from the right side, and after a header deflection by Jordyn Braun, Olson headed the ball from three yards out over Montgomery's hands, and the ball inched just over the line to tie the game at 1-1 with 25:35 remaining.
The Mavericks' back line was solid in the second half, holding Creighton to zero shots on goal and forcing the Jays offsides six times in the game. UNO had a chance to win the game with just under two minutes left, but Archuleta couldn't connect on a shot from 12 yards out.
The Mavs outshot Creighton in the second half, 6-2. Tschida finished with four saves in the full 90 minutes for UNO.
UNO opens the regular season at Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday at 7 p.m.
