DENVER, Colo. – The UNO volleyball team dropped its last two matches of the Colorado Premier Challenge on Saturday, falling 3-2 to Regis (16-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 13-15) and 3-1 to UC-Colorado Springs (21-25, 25-17, 26-28, 20-25). The Mavericks are now 2-10 on the year.
Sophomore outside hitter Abby Sorensen shined for the Mavs, totaling a combined 37 kills over the two matches. Sorensen had 26 kills in the UCCS match alone, which smashed her previous career high of 19 set against Cal Baptist on Friday in Denver.
MATCH 1 – REGIS 3, UNO 2
Junior outside hitter Natalie Ebke earned her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high-tying 19 kills and 22 digs. Abby Sorensen (11) and junior middle blocker Lizzy Mach (10) also reached double figures in kills and tallied two blocks apiece. Senior libero Angie Reicks put up 25 digs, marking her third match this season with 25 or more, and sophomore defensive specialist Amy Roberts chipped in 13 digs of her own. At the net, senior middle blocker Brittany Hanssen had a team-leading four blocks.
Regis was led by 13 kills from Kyndell Highland and another 10 from Gina Morgan, who hit .450 for the day. Morgan also had a team-best four blocks that tied Hanssen for the match-leading total.
Despite five kills from Ebke, RU took the first game 25-16. Tied at 7-7, the Rangers went on a 10-1 run with two service aces and forced three Maverick errors. Three consecutive kills from UNO's Snyder and Ebke put the Mavs back in the game, but Regis held on for the 25-16 opening-set win.
Nebraska Omaha rebounded in the second set to tie the match at one game apiece. Behind four kills from Mach and three from Hanssen, the Mavericks hit .194 as a team and held the Rangers to a .054 mark. The score sat tied at 21-21 late in the set, but two RU errors and a pair of kills by Mach closed it at 25-22.
After Regis grabbed a 25-19 win in game three, UNO scrapped back for a 25-23 victory in set four. The Rangers took a lead at 14-10, but the Mavs battled to finally knot the score at 21-all. Regis regained the advantage, and UNO tied it again at 23-all with back-to-back kills from Mach and Ebke. After an ace from Roberts, Ebke put down the final kill to grab the 25-23 win.
In the fifth and final game, the two squads played close to the end. The set sat tied at 12-12 and again at 13-13 when RU's Jessica Wojcik had a kill. Sage Martinson immediately put down another to go up 14-13, and following a UNO timeout, the Rangers finished it off at 15-13.
MATCH 2 – UCCS 3, UNO 1
Sorensen was the star of the second match against Colorado-Colorado Springs, totaling a career-best 26 kills on .477 hitting. The Clay Center, Neb., native added 15 kills for a double-double, as well as three aces, a dig and a block.
Ebke and Hanssen joined her in double figures, totaling 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Ebke chipped in another 15 digs, as did Reicks. The Mavs' blocking effort was led by five blocks from Hanssen and another four from freshman middle blocker Jessy Schroedter.
UCCS was led by 19 kills from Nikki Kinzer, who hit .469 for the night, and Alex Wood, who finished with 11 kills of her own.
The Mountain Lions opened with a 25-21 win in the first set, but Nebraska Omaha, bolstered by four kills from Sorensen, came back to take the second game at 25-17. The Mavs never faltered, going out to a 16-8 lead on four UCCS attack errors. Two kills and an ace from Sorensen, as well as a kill by Mach, helped stretch it to 20-13, and four more Colorado Springs errors sealed the victory at 25-17.
Sorensen exploded for 11 kills in the third game, but it was not enough to carry the Mavs as UCCS prevailed for a 28-26 win. She chipped in another six in the final set, but the Mountain Lions took the final set 25-20 for the 3-1 match victory.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16, playing its second Red/Black Scrimmage of the year at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
