Mavs Close Season With Two Home Matches

The Omaha women's soccer team wraps up its season with two home games this weekend. On Friday, the Mavs host South Dakota State at the UNO Soccer Field at 3 p.m. On Sunday, UNO hosts North Dakota State on Senior Day at 2:15 p.m. The Mavs will recognize their lone senior, Danielle Archuleta, prior to the game. The Mavs have the opportunity to play spoiler this weekend, as both South Dakota State and North Dakota State are among five Summit League teams left competing for four Summit League Championship spots. The Mavs are unable to qualify for the conference tournament because of their NCAA transitional status. The Mavs dropped two road matches last weekend to fall to 3-13 overall and 3-3 in Summit League play. The Mavs are in sixth place in the conference standings with nine points and two games remaining entering this weekend. South Dakota State is in fifth place with 10 points and one game to play, and North Dakota State is in a three-way tie for second with 12 points with one game left.
Series History
UNO has not lost to South Dakota State in five tries. The Mavs hold a 4-0-1 series edge. The last meeting came on Oct. 19, 2007, as UNO earned a 2-1 win at SDSU. UNO and North Dakota State have an even series record at 3-3. North Dakota State defeated UNO 3-1 last year on Sept. 18, 2011 at NDSU.
Senior Salute
Senior forward Danielle Archuleta has capped her four-year career with an outstanding senior season. The only senior for the Mavericks, Archuleta enters the weekend leading the team in scoring with 11 points on a team-high five goals and one assist. Archuleta scored goals in three straight games from Aug. 31 to Sept. 7, and she notched the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Fort Wayne on Sept. 28. Archuleta's five goals are tied for second in The Summit League, and her 11 points are tied for sixth. The Columbus native ranks 15th in school history with 14 career goals and 19th with 31 points. A clutch player for the Mavs over the years, Archuleta has five game-winning goals to rank 13th in UNO history.
Career Firsts
Sophomore Anna Sibson and freshman Layla Ashouri combined for some career firsts last Sunday at IUPUI. Ashouri earned her first career assist and point as a Maverick by setting up Sibson for her first career goal. Sibson is second on the team with six points this season, as she has a team-high four assists to go with her goal.
Last Time Out
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The IUPUI Jaguars jumped out in front of the UNO women's soccer team with two goals in the first 20 minutes and held on for a 2-1 win on Sunday. IUPUI started the scoring in the 11th minute when Taylor Heidorn scored a rebound from 12 yards out. In the 19th minute, Kalli Shepler-Tucker doubled the lead when she collected a loose ball in the box and walked it into the net. The Mavs made a game of it in the 73rd minute when Anna Sibson scored the first goal of her career off of an assist from Layla Ashouri. Sibson's shot from 14 yards out found the back of the net and gave UNO hope of tying the match in the final stages. But aside from a corner kick in the 85th minute, the Mavericks were unable to threaten the Jaguar net the rest of the way. Meaghan Clark made seven saves in the defeat. IUPUI outshot UNO 15-8 overall and 9-6 in shots on goal.
Scouting South Dakota State
The Jackrabbits enter their final game of the season with a 5-9-2 overall record and 3-3-1 record in conference play. SDSU needs a win and some help to climb into the top four of the standings to qualify for The Summit League Championship. The Jackrabbits have vaulted up the standings in the past two weeks with a 3-0-1 record in their past four games. Diana Potterveld leads the attack with 13 points.
Scouting North Dakota State
The Bison are 7-9 overall and 4-3 in Summit League play entering their final game Sunday. With 12 points, NDSU is among the top four teams that would qualify for The Summit League Championship but could be passed by SDSU. The Bison have been a strong home team with a 5-1 record, but on the road they are just 2-7, including losses in their last four road matches. Anisha Kinnarath leads the squad with 16 points on five goals and six assists.
