VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Omaha men's basketball team began the second round of the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic on Friday, falling 93-81 to Bethune Cookman at Valparaiso's Athletics-Recreation Center. The Mavericks are now 1-5 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-3 (0-0 MEAC).

Freshman guard Marcus Tyus led the Mavericks with a season-high 17 points off the bench, finishing 7-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from long range along with four rebounds.

Junior center John Karhoff added 16 points, three boards and a team-leading five assists, while junior guard Justin Simmons chipped in 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Junior guard Alex Phillips, earning his first start of the year, was the fourth Maverick in double figures with 11 points on a 5-for-7 shooting effort with three helpers, three boards and a pair of steals.

Junior forward Alex Welhouse also had a team-best seven rebounds with six points on a pair of threes.

As a team, Omaha shot 47.6 percent from the floor, while Bethune-Cookman posted a nearly identical 47.8 percent performance. The Wildcats were strong from the line, shooting 91 percent.

BCU was paced by a double-double from Adrien Coleman, who recorded 31 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Coleman was 12-for-18 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. In addition, Kevin Dukes totaled eight points, three rebounds, 10 assists and three steals.

The Wildcats had two other players with double-figure efforts off the bench, as Paul Scotland had 18 points with 9-for-9 free throw shooting, and Malik Jackson totaled 11 points with three 3-pointers.
