Mavs Earn 65-58 Win Over Loyola Chicago

OMAHA, Neb. - Paige Frauendorfer scored 18 points - 17 in the second half - and grabbed 13 rebounds, and the Omaha women's basketball team earned a 65-58 win over Loyola Chicago on Saturday at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Mavs improved to 6-2 on the season and concluded their eight-game home stretch to open the season. Loyola dropped to 3-5.
The Mavs found themselves in another down-to-the-wire game at home, trailing 55-54 with under three minutes to play. But Casse Vaughn rebounded an errant 3-pointer by Ericka House and put it home for a 56-55 UNO lead with 2:56 to play, and the Mavs would never relinquish the lead again. After Loyola missed a 3-point attempt, Frauendorfer converted an old-fashioned three-point play at the other end to put UNO up 59-55 with 1:30 left. Then after a timeout, Frauendorfer intercepted a Loyola inbounds pass underneath its own basket, and the Mavs were able to take the clock under a minute.
After each team failed to score, House grabbed a rebound and the Mavs worked the ball around the backcourt before Frauendorfer tossed it up the court to a wide-open Vaughn for an easy layup and 61-56 lead with 26 seconds left. King knocked down a trey to make it 61-58, then House hit two free throws for a 63-58 Mav lead. Frauendorfer blocked a Rambler 3-point attempt at the other end, and Nash iced the victory with two more free throws.
Frauendorfer scored just one point in the first half after going 0-for-5 from the floor. But in the second half, she struck for 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. She also matched her season high with 13 rebounds. Jamie Nash played the entire game and added 16 points and seven assists to just three turnovers. House finished with 10 points and four rebounds, and Vaughn had nine points and four rebounds.
UNO held a four-point lead at halftime and led 43-38 before Nash and Frauendorfer each hit 3-pointers for a 49-38 lead with 11:50 left. But the Mavs went the next 5:08 without a field goal and the Ramblers clawed back into the game, cutting the deficit to 50-46 on a Taylor Johnson bucket with 7:18 left in the game. Frauendorfer ended the Mavs' dry spell with a baseline jumper with 6:42 left, but Loyola immediately cut the lead back down to four, 52-48, on a basket by Abby Skube.
Coming out of a media timeout, Loyola's Monica Albano hit a 3-pointer and Patrice King converted a putback after the Ramblers forced another UNO turnover, and the Ramblers regained a 53-52 lead with 5:15 left, their first lead since the 7:12 mark of the first half. Two free throws by Nash regained the lead for UNO with 5:13 to play, but Skube knocked down free throws at the other end for a 55-54 Loyola lead with 4:11 left. But the Mavs weren't about to let the win slip away, outscoring Loyola 11-3 over the final 2:56.
The Mavericks committed 16 turnovers, but more importantly forced 14 turnovers by Loyola, who came into the game ranked No. 1 in Division I with just 11.7 turnovers per game. UNO scored 16 points off turnovers to just 11 for Loyola. The Mavs' bench stepped up big and outscored Loyola's bench, 21-2.
UNO led 28-24 at the halftime break after closing the half on a 13-5 spurt. With Loyola leading 19-15, Taijhe Kelly scored in the paint and Nash hit a jumper to tie the game with 7:11 left in the half. UNO then took the lead, 21-19, on a close-range shot by Nash. Vaughn scored two buckets in the final four minutes of the half sandwiched around a 3-pointer by House.
Albano had a game-high 21 points for Loyola.
The Mavericks will take the next week off for final exams before returning to action on Dec. 17 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, UNO's first road game of the season.
