Mavericks Announce 2012-13 Men's Basketball Slate

2012-13 UNO Men's Basketball Schedule
OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball program has finalized its 2012-13 season schedule, head coach Derrin Hansen announced Monday. The Mavericks' second year as a Division I school includes 13 home games and a full Summit League schedule in the inaugural season at the Ralston Sports and Event Center.
The Mavs' slate includes games with 18 different Division I opponents, and the team will play in 13 states and all four time zones across the country. UNO enters its second year as a reclassifying Division I institution and will begin play as a member of the Summit League with a full regular-season conference schedule. Also in 2012-13, the Mavericks move their home games to the new Ralston Sports and Event Center, which is currently under construction and will open in the fall of 2012 with a capacity of 4,000 seats.
The schedule also features games against three 2012 NCAA Tournament teams – Wisconsin, Iowa State and defending Summit League champion South Dakota State.
Nebraska Omaha makes its season debut with the home opener against Northern Illinois on Nov. 9, which falls during UNO Homecoming Week. Last season, the Mavericks earned their first win over a fellow Division I opponent at NIU, defeating the Huskies 77-72 in DeKalb, Ill. Homecoming weekend is capped with contest against Saint Mary (Kan.) on Nov. 11.
UNO's schedule then takes a challenging turn, lining up nine straight road games from mid-November to the end of the fall semester. The Mavs will participate in a two-week tournament, traveling to Tulane (Nov. 16) and in-state foe Nebraska (Nov. 18) before facing Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 23) and either Chicago State or Valparaiso (Nov. 24) in Valparaiso, Ind.
The Mavericks kick off Summit League play with a road trip to North Dakota State (Nov. 29) and South Dakota State (Dec. 1). They then face back-to-back NCAA Tournament qualifiers with away contests at Wisconsin (Dec. 4) and Iowa State (Dec. 9), followed by a tilt at Denver (Dec. 15). UNO returns to Omaha to host Benedictine College (Dec. 18) and travels to UT-Pan American (Dec. 22) before Winter Break.
Conference play resumes after the holidays as the Mavericks bring South Dakota (Dec. 29) and UMKC (Dec. 31) to Omaha. Games at Oakland (Jan. 3) and IPFW (Jan. 5) follow, and UNO hosts IUPUI and Western Illinois on Jan. 10 and Jan. 12, respectively.
A non-conference trip to the west coast breaks up Summit League play, as UNO goes to Cal State Bakersfield (Jan. 19) for the third matchup in two years. The Mavs then face six straight conference peers: at South Dakota (Jan. 24), at UMKC (Jan. 26), IPFW (Jan. 31), Oakland (Feb. 2), at Western Illinois (Feb. 7) and at IUPUI (Feb. 9).
The year is capped by a four-game homestand opened with Chicago State on Feb. 19. An ESPN BracketBuster game against an opponent to be determined will be played Feb. 23 at Ralston Sports and Event Center, followed by final home contests with South Dakota State (Feb. 28) and North Dakota State (March 2).
“Our team is excited to play its second year as a Division I member this season,” Hansen said. “The Ralston Sports and Event Center is a great venue where our student-athletes can compete at the highest level and our fans can watch a thrilling Division I schedule. The Summit League will provide us a full conference slate in 2012-13, which gives us a glimpse of where we are and where we're trying to go.
“Our home schedule, along with mid- to high-major road games, will provide our players and fans another exciting year of Maverick Basketball as we take our program to new heights.”
Hansen enters his eighth season at the helm of the Maverick program, boasting a career record of 121-86. The Mavericks return seven letterwinners from last season, including four starters in senior Alex Welhouse, juniors John Karhoff and Caleb Steffensmeier and sophomore CJ Carter.
