Mavericks Tie Iowa Western, 3-3, in Exhibition Mat

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's soccer team tied Iowa Western, 3-3, in an exhibition match Saturday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.

Playing just one day after beginning preseason practice, UNO took a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the game when Jordan Gealy played in a cross from the left side and Logan Mendez rose above a defender to head the ball into the net.

The Reivers tied the match at the 32:10 mark when after a sequence of quick passes, Renato Dos Anjos buried a shot from eight yards out from the left side of the box.

After halftime, Iowa Western grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute when Pedro Vianna Augusto put a shot from 10 yards out into the right corner of the net. But the Mavericks tied the game in the 67th minute when Vance Rookwood headed in a free kick from Gealy, Gealy's second assist of the game.

Iowa Western earned a penalty kick with 17:42 left after a UNO handball in the box, but the shot went over the goal to keep the score deadlocked.

The Mavs capitalized off another set piece to make it 3-2 at the 82:46 mark. Devin Diego played in a corner, and Nick Miller redirected it to the foot of his fellow defender, Felipe da Silva, who buried a shot from eight yards into the left corner.

But Iowa Western scored less than a minute later when Shaka Chol gathered a Maverick turnover in the box and scored to tie it at 3-3. The game ended after 90 minutes.

The Mavs play another exhibition at Drake on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.
