The UNO women's soccer team makes a road trip to the mountains this weekend to take on Wyoming and Northern Colorado. The Mavs begin the road swing at Wyoming on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. (CT). UNO then heads south for a 2 p.m. (CT) match at Northern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 2. Live stats for both matches will be available at OMavs.com.
Series History
UNO will be playing Wyoming for the first time. Northern Colorado and UNO have a seven-game history dating back to their days as members of the North Central Conference. The Bears own the 4-3 series lead and beat the Mavericks 1-0 on an 85th minute goal in the Mavs' season finale last year, the first meeting between the teams since 2002.
Searching for 200
Don Klosterman will take aim at a coaching milestone when he leads the UNO women's soccer team into its 14th season in 2012. The only head coach the University of Nebraska Omaha has had, Klosterman has a 198-62-12 record, just two wins from win number 200 in his outstanding career at UNO. The two-time Division II National Coach of the Year has led the Mavericks to the national semifinals four times, culminating in the 2005 NCAA Division II National Championship. Assistant coach Ted Anderson is in his 14th season at UNO and has been with Klosterman every step of the way.
Eyeing the Summit
Although the Mavericks will be playing their first season in The Summit League, UNO has some familiarity with the league after playing four Summit League teams last season. The Mavs posted a 2-2 record against their future league foes. UNO knocked off South Dakota, 3-2, on Aug. 28 for its first win over a Division I team as a Division I program. The Mavs fell at Summit League regular-season runner-up North Dakota State, 3-1, on Sept. 18, and at UMKC, 2-1, on Sept. 24. Those two teams posted a combined 13-3-2 conference record last year. UNO closed its mini-Summit League slate with a 1-0 win at Western Illinois to get back to .500 against its future opposition.

OMAHA, Neb. - Utah State scored twice in the final 16 minutes to take a 3-1 win over the UNO women's soccer team last Sunday before 204 fans at the UNO Soccer Field. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 0-3 on the season. The Aggies improved to 3-0-1 with the win. Utah State, a 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifier, went up 1-0 on a 25-yard shot by Mari Miyashiro in the 14th minute of the match. The Mavericks tied the game at the 20:56 mark on a penalty kick by Monica Bosiljevac. In the second half, the Aggies applied steady pressure but for the most part were unable to test Clark with threatening shots. But Miyashiro took advantage of a Maverick turnover in the box to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute. In the 79th minute, Utah State added an insurance goal when Danielle Gaztambide tapped in a centering pass from Taryn Rose. The Aggies finished with an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
Scouting Wyoming
Wyoming is 3-1 with wins over Lamar, Montana State-Billings and Weber State following a season-opening loss to Montana. The Cowgirls are led by Sara Paul, who has two goals and one assist. Wyoming returns nine starters from last year's team that finished 12-6-4. Wyoming is coached by Pete Cuadrado, who is in his first season after nine years at TCU.
Scouting Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado enters Friday's game at Utah State with an 0-2-1 record. The Bears are led in scoring by Brittany Dunn, who has one goal and one assist. UNC returns six starters from last year's team that went 8-7-5. Tim Barrera is in his 14th year as the head coach with a record of 117-110-19.
Welcome to The Summit League
The 2012 season marks UNO's first with a full Summit League schedule. UNO will play all eight Summit League foes once, starting with a Sept. 28 game at home against Fort Wayne. Although the Mavericks will appear in the Summit League standings, UNO cannot qualify for the Summit League Championship or the NCAA Tournament until 2015-16.
Junior Achievements
The Mavs will lean heavily on their six-player junior class in their first Summit League season. The six juniors have a combined 146 career starts among them. Last year, Jordyn Braun and Kerry Pivovar started every game on the Maverick back line, while Melanie McCormick started every game in the central midfield. Monica Bosiljevac started the first six games before her season ended due to injury, and Sarah Nordstrom and Logen Watts started eight and seven games, respectively, while appearing in every game.
Youth Movement
The Mavericks had a young team in their first Division I season in 2011 with 14 underclassmen (six freshmen and eight sophomores) on the 22-player roster, but they will be equally young in 2012. Among the 18 players on the roster this year, 11 are underclassmen (seven freshmen and four sophomores). The lone senior on this year's squad is Danielle Archuleta.
New in Net
Last year's starting goalkeeper, Katelyn Tschida, decided to hang up the cleats in the offseason after two years with the Mavericks, temporarily leaving sophomore Sarah Warren, who has played 24 career minutes, as the only goalkeeper on the Mavs' roster. The Mavs were able to sign Boise, Idaho native Meaghan Clark in the summer, giving the Mavs two young goalies for the 2012 season.
Fresh Faces
Clark is one of seven freshmen in the 2012 signing class, which comprises three Nebraska talents and four out-of-state players. Lincoln Southeast teammates Hannah Wampler and Morgan Westenburg, as well as Omaha Burke's Alex Wichman, make up the three in-state newcomers. Clark, Haley Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.), Layla Ashouri (Parker, Colo.) and Katlyn Nimtz (Allen, Texas) round out the rest of the freshman class. Shelton is out indefinitely after an offseason injury.

The Mavs will play five opponents that were part of the 2011 slate: Northern Colorado, South Dakota, UMKC, Western Illinois and North Dakota State. UNO went 2-3 against those teams last year. Two 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifiers appear on the Mavs' schedule this year and both make the trip to Omaha: Utah State (Sunday, Aug. 26) and Oakland (Sunday, Sept. 30). On Friday, Sept. 7, the Mavs will host crosstown rival Creighton at 5:30 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field. The Mavs' first-ever official Summit League contest will be at home against Fort Wayne on Friday, Sept. 28. Senior Day is set for Sunday, Oct. 28 against North Dakota State at 2:15 p.m.
Mavs Picked to Tie For Eighth in Summit League Preseason Poll
UNO was picked to tie for eighth in The Summit League Women's Soccer Preseason Poll, voted on by the league's nine head coaches. Oakland, after becoming the first fourth-seeded team to win The Summit League Championship last season, was selected as the preseason favorite to repeat for the title. The Golden Grizzlies landed five first-place votes, while last season's regular-season champion South Dakota State collected the remaining four first-place tallies and finished second in the poll. Kansas City edged out North Dakota State by one point for third place, followed by Fort Wayne in the fifth slot. IUPUI and Western Illinois tied for sixth, while the Mavericks and South Dakota tied for eighth place to round out the poll. The top four teams in the regular-season standings (excluding UNO) will compete for The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship at Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, S.D., Nov. 2 and 4. The tournament champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's College Cup. The Mavericks are not eligible for the conference tournament or postseason play until 2015.
