GRINNELL, Iowa – The Omaha swimming and diving team opened the Grinnell Invite in first place on Friday, collecting 550 team points to lead the field of 11 women's teams.
The Mavericks kicked off the competition with a runner-up finish (1:41.09) from the 200 free relay team made up of freshmen Natalie Renshaw and Hannah Johnson, sophomore Ashley Kneifl and junior Whitney Korgan.
Sophomore Lexi Bergeron then raced to first in the 200 IM (2:11.14), narrowly out-touching Renshaw (2:11.35), who took second. Junior Madeline Hutt followed with 24 points from a win in the 200 breast (2:23.58).
Omaha's 800 free relay team of Kneifl, Bergeron, sophomore Christen Young and junior Erin Wright clocked a time of 8:03.34 for a top showing. Johnson, Renshaw, Korgan and senior Mattie Fosbender took second (8:03.76).
The 400 medley relay team led by seniors Cami Hansberry and Anna Haxby, along with Hutt and sophomore Jenna Foiles, took first in their race, going 4:02.76.
After the first day of competition, Omaha leads the women's team standings with 550 points. Gustavus Adolphus is in second (518), and Luther College is in third (3450. Grinnell (303), Macalester College (235), St. Catherine (199), Augustana (195), Nebraska-Kearney (146), Coe College (96), Simpson College (52) and College of St. Mary (22) round out the field.
The Mavs cap their time at the Grinnell Invite on Saturday, Jan. 19.
