Mavs Remain Unbeaten at Home, Top Seattle 76-69

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's basketball team remained undefeated at home Sunday afternoon, picking up a 76-69 win over Seattle in front of a season-high 1,593 fans at Ralston Arena. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 9-4 (0-0 Summit League), while the Redhawks drop to 8-4 (0-0 WAC).

Four Mavericks finished with double-figure scoring efforts, led by 17 points from junior guard CJ Carter, who also added two rebounds, three assists and a steal. Senior center John Karhoff also totaled 14 points with four boards, four assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Devin Patterson and senior guard Justin Simmons rounded out the performance with 12 points apiece.

Sophomore guard Marcus Tyus pulled down a team-leading six rebounds, while senior forward Matt Hagerbaumer grabbed another five with six points and a block. Simmons also had four rebounds with two steals for the day.

Seattle looked to Isiah Umipig all day, as he finished with a career-high 35 points on six 3-pointers and 11-of-18 shooting. Clarence Trent also had 10 points with five rebounds and a pair of threes, and Jack Crook nabbed a team-best six boards.

As a team, Omaha shot 38 percent (22-of-58) from the field and 30 percent (6-of-20) from long range. Seattle finished with a 45 percent (25-of-56) effort from the floor and 44 percent (10-of-23) from beyond the arc. Neither team shot a single free throw in the first half, but Omaha closed the game with an 81 percent (26-of-32) showing, and SU came in at 82 percent (9-of-11).

Despite shooting just 28 percent and seeing a 20-12 rebounding deficit in the first half, Omaha hung right with Seattle. The Redhawks took a quick 4-0 lead to start the game, but Omaha came back with the help of threes from Karhoff and Simmons to make it 6-4. A four-and-a-half minute scoring drought for both teams was broken with a tip-in by Crook, followed by a Simmons jumper and a Carter three that pushed UNO up 13-11. The Mavericks retained the lead until 2:09, when a 3-pointer from Umipig sparked an 8-0 Redhawk run in the closing minutes. Simmons capped the half with a long 3-pointer at the buzzer, cutting it to 26-22 by the break.

SU took it out to a seven-point advantage to start the second half, but the Mavericks slowly chipped away with back-to-back dunks from Hagerbaumer, a Carter layup and a Karhoff jumper that knotted it at 33-33 five minutes in. Two Tyus layups spotted Omaha a four-point lead, but a trio of threes from Umipig and another from Trent made it 43-42 for Seattle.

The Mavericks then went on a 14-4 run, capped by a Karhoff jumper, to make it 54-47 with less than four minutes to play. UNO took its largest lead at 2:33, going up 64-51 on a Hagerbaumer dunk. Seattle then battled back, and Umipig poured in his sixth triple to make it 67-65 with 1:22 to go. The Mavericks responded with a fastbreak layup from senior guard Alex Phillips and made seven of their last eight free throws, securing the 76-69 victory to improve to a flawless 6-0 at home.
