Box Score
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNO softball team capped an undefeated opening day with a 6-2 win over host UNC-Wilmington at the UNCW Beach Blast Friday evening.
Sophomore transfer Allie Mathewson accomplished a rare feat in her Maverick debut on Friday, hitting leadoff home runs in the Mavs' first at bat of two games in the same day. Her leadoff homer against UNC-Wilmington started a two-run first inning for the second straight game, and the Mavs never led by fewer than two the rest of the way in improving to 2-0 on the season.
After Mathewson's homer, Amber Lutmer scored on a throwing error by the third baseman on a Molly Negrete single to make it 2-0. In the top of the third, UNO made it 3-0 when Tonya Peterson hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Campbell Ditto.
The Seahawks got on the board in the bottom of the third, but Ditto hit her first career homer with Lindsay Redding on base in the top of the fourth to extend the Mavs lead to 5-1.
UNCW made it 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Omaha answered with a run in the sixth on an infield single by Redding that scored Mara Eeman.
Sophomore pitcher Kat Barrow (1-0) went the distance, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, one walk and nine strikeouts.
Ditto finished 2-for-4 with a triple and home run, and she scored twice and had two RBIs.
The Mavs are back on the diamond on Saturday at 8 a.m. against Iona - who UNO defeated earlier Friday 7-0 - and at 10:30 against Detroit.
