SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Omaha baseball team opened the 2013 season at the UTSA Classic on Friday night, falling 5-0 to host UTSA at Wolff Stadium. The Mavericks are now 0-1 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Roadrunners improve to 6-3 (0-0 WAC).
UTSA's Michael Kraft (1-1) earned the win, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Senior Matt Tew took the loss after 4.2 innings of work, giving up four hits on four earned runs while striking out four and walking one.
Freshman Alex Schultz went 2-for-3 with a double in his collegiate debut, while senior Tyler Splichal and junior Brett Bass each tallied a single.
Daniel Rockett led the Roadrunners with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a two-run home run in the fifth inning and a pair of runs scored. RJ Perucki finished 1-for-4 with a base-clearing inside-the-park homer that got UTSA on the board in the third.
Omaha returns to action at the UTSA Classic on Saturday, March 2, facing Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Wolff Stadium, and a link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
