GREELEY, Colo. – Despite a season-high 19 hits, the Omaha baseball team dropped its series opener at Northern Colorado on Thursday, falling 13-12 in 10 innings at Jackson Field. The Mavericks are now 5-10 (0-0 Summit League), while the Bears improve to 5-11 (0-0 Great West).
The loss went to junior Josh Bullock (0-1), who gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with a strikeout over the last 3.1 innings. Eian Raeber (1-1) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the 10th inning.
Omaha starter Sam Murphy went 4.0 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) off four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
As a team, UNO pounded out a season-high 19 hits. Sophomore Alex Mortensen doubled twice and finished 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, while freshman Alex Schultz went 3-for-5 with two runs and another driven in.
Senior Ryan Keele also tallied three hits and an RBI, and freshman Cole Gruber finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Junior Brett Bass had another multi-hit performance with a 2-for-7 day on two doubles, scoring twice and driving in another pair of runs. Senior Tyler Splichal rounded it out with a 2-for-5 effort with an RBI, and redshirt freshman Connor Messinger put up a pair of runs as well.
Northern Colorado, which finished with 18 hits, was led by Ryan Yamane and Nick Miller, who each tallied three. Miller chipped in three runs scored and two RBI, and Jensen Park posted two hits, two runs scored and three driven in.
The score sat tied at 2-2 after the second inning and 3-3 after the third before the Mavs went up 4-3 in the fifth. Northern Colorado then came back for three runs in the sixth, going ahead 6-4.
In the top of the seventh, Omaha exploded for six runs on six hits. Mortensen and Keele both singled up the middle and Messinger was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Schultz, who singled through the right side to score Mortensen. Gruber later doubled to left center with one out to plate Schultz and Messinger, and Bass followed with a two-run double to left that brought in Gruber and Palensky. Splichal's RBI single up the middle allowed Bass to cross the sixth run of the inning, making it 10-6.
The Mavs' lead was short-lived though, as UNC responded with six hits in the bottom of the frame and took advantage of on a Maverick error to score five runs and go ahead 11-10. Omaha tied it again with a run in the ninth as Keele's RBI single to right scored freshman Marcus Ethen to stall it at 11-11 and send the game to extra innings.
The Mavs regained the lead in the top of the 10th, starting it off with Schultz's leadoff single to right. He then advanced to third with a UNC error, and senior Cory Buckley's RBI infield single brought in Schultz to make it 12-11.
The Bears, however, had the final word in the bottom of the 10th. Derek Baum led off with a single up the middle, and Joe Love and Landon Moseley both reached on a fielder's choice to put two on with one out. A passed ball advanced both runners into scoring position, and pinch hitter Colby Harrison's RBI groundout scored Love. With two outs, Dylan Banach singled down the left field line to score Moseley, lifting the Bears to the 13-12 series-opening win.
Omaha returns to action on Friday, March 22, facing Northern Colorado in a Noon doubleheader at Jackson Field in Greeley, Colo. A link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
