GREELEY, Colo. – The Omaha baseball team finished its series at Northern Colorado on Thursday, falling 19-3 in seven innings at Jackson Field. A doubleheader was originally scheduled, but the second game was called off midway through due to snowy conditions. The Mavericks are no w 5-11 (0-0 Summit League) on the year, while the Bears improve to 6-11.
The win went to Jake Johnson (2-2), who threw 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Senior Matt Tew (0-3) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits with three Ks and three walks over 3.0 innings of work.
Junior Brett Bass led Omaha with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and drove in two runs. Freshman Alex Schultz finished 1-for-2 with a run scored, and junior Caleb Palensky tallied a run and an RBI of his own.
UNC's Dylan Banach went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and four driven in. Ben Netzel (3-for-4), Ben Packard (2-for-3), Jensen Park (2-for-5) and Joe Love (2-for-3) also had multi-hit performances.
Northern Colorado scored in every inning, playing four runs in the first, three in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and fifth and another pair in the sixth. The Bears totaled 18 hits for the afternoon to Omaha's eight.
For its part, UNO put up two runs in the second and another in the fourth. In the second frame, Schultz tripled to right center and scored on Palensky's RBI groundout. Gruber followed with a double to left center, and Bass put a single into center to plate Gruber. In the fourth, Palensky walked and later tallied the Mavs' last run on a Bass double to right.
