OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha head volleyball coach Rose Shires is one of seven honorees who will be inducted into the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 25.
The esteemed 2013 class of inductees includes Shires, Sandy Buda, Dr. Jack Lewis, Jerry Murtaugh, Wally Provost, Connie Yori and the 1963 Omaha Tech High School basketball team. The Omaha Sports Hall of fame honors men and women who have impacted the Omaha-area sports community. This year marks the seventh class of Hall of Fame inductees.
Shires will enter her 24th season as head coach of the Maverick volleyball program in 2013, having taken the reins of the program in 1990 after two seasons as UNO's assistant coach. The veteran leader has amassed a 435-289 (.601) career coaching record, making her the winningest coach in school history for total career wins. She also ranks second all-time in winning percentage.
Shires has enjoyed tremendous success as Omaha's head coach. She led UNO to its first NCAA Championship in 1996, followed by an Elite Eight appearance in 1997. For her efforts, Shires was named the 1996 AVCA National Coach of the Year, North Central Region Coach of the Year, and NCC Co-Coach of the Year. During the 1996 championship run, the Mavericks finished their season at 35-2. The record marked the best winning percentage (.946) and fewest losses in school history.
Over the past two decades as Omaha's mentor, Shires has coached nine players to 27 All-America awards, including five from the AVCA First Teams. Thirty-five of her players have combined for 61 all-conference honors in NCC and MIAA play, and 18 have gone on to claim 34 all-region honors.
Shires' student-athletes have also had tremendous success in the classroom. The Mavericks have earned 16 AVCA team academic awards for having a team grade-point average of 3.30 or better, including the last 13 consecutive seasons. She has coached two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, and in 2008, her entire squad was placed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for having individual GPAs of at last 3.0, along with a combined mark of 3.67.
The Hall of Fame induction will be held at Scott Conference Center, and seating is limited. The evening includes a full slate of celebratory events, with a cocktail reception from 6 to 7 p.m. followed by a dinner and program at 7:05 p.m.
