Mavs Close Season at Summit Championship

The Omaha men's and women's golf teams conclude their respective seasons at their first ever Summit League Championships on Monday-Wednesday, April 22-24. Both championships will be staged at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club in Keller, Texas beginning at 8 a.m. each day.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.

Senior Elizabeth Havekost shot a final round 80 to help the Omaha women's golf team to a tie for sixth-place at the Creighton Classic on Tuesday, April 16 at Oak Hills Country Club.
The Mavericks finished with a team score of 664, tying them with South Dakota. North Dakota State won with a team total of 625 for the 36-hole event. Northern Iowa was second with a score of 630 while Western Illinois was third at 649.
Havekost finished with a score of 159, 15 over par, to finish in a tie for seventh overall in the 72-player field. Katie Kesti shot 164, second for UNO and in a tie for 15th.
Brooke Thilges finished in a tie for 20th at 165. Melyssa Doerr had a two-day total of 177 putting her fourth for UNO and in a tie for 51st overall. Sophie Peters closed the scoring at 179, good for a tie for 56th.
Men's Marks
Through ten tournaments, including four during the spring, sophomore Karl Krieser leads the Mavericks in scoring with a stroke average of 76.8 in 23 rounds. He's followed closely by Alex Overfelt who is second at 77.5 in 26 rounds. Mitch Johnson and Michael Shukis are 3-4 in scoring with stroke averages of 78.4 and 78.6 respectively. Taylor Sidzyik (79.5) and Mitch Ryan (79.6) are close behind.
Krieser owns four of the top six 18-hole rounds shot by the Mavericks this year. He is tied with Alex Holtan for the best round of the year at 71. Krieser got his in the first round of the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational on Oct. 22 while Holtan picked up his in the second round of the Beu Mussatto Invitational on March 29. Alex Overfelt also cracked the top six with a career-best score of 72 in the first round of the Sacramento State Invitational on March 11.
UNO's top team round this season is 294 in the second round of the Beu Mussatto Invitational on March 29.
Women's Marks
The Mavericks have played in just eight tournaments this season, including only two in the spring due to weather. Senior Elizabeth Havekost is the scoring leader with a stroke average of 82.1 through 20 rounds. She is one of three Mavs to play in all 20 rounds this season. Sophomore Sophie Peters is second at 82.7 while junior Brooke Thilges is third at 83.3. Freshman Katie Kesti (83.5) and Melyssa Doerr (86.9) round out the top five.
Peters has carded the top five 18-hole rounds of the season for the Mavs and seven of the top nine. She shot a personal and team season best 73 in the first round of the Payne Stewart Memorial at Missouri State on Oct. 15. Among active golfers, Havekost is the only other Mav in the top nine with a round of 78 in the second round of the Kangarooo Classic at Kansas City on April 8.
UNO's top team round this season is 319 in the first round of the Concordia University Invitational on Sept. 16.
